I Read Books. I Write Lengthy Essays. I Live Apart from The Online Noise. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- And I’m worried that fewer people are doing these activities. The Goal? --------- Run exclusively by Ivaylo Durmonski and supported by Premium Members, the goal of this site is simple: Rigorous production of timeless literary works to foster long-term thinking in our (sadly) short-term world. In particular, instead of bombarding you with cringe-worthy nonsense and over-the-top “you can do it” mottos, I curate. I hunt down the best books. I search for uncommon ideas. I fact-check. The end result? Thoughtful, practical, content that acts as an intellectual slap in the face, jolting you out of your autopilot mode. All of the above, in the form of actionable book summaries, in-depth how-to articles, guides on self-discipline and habits, and more recently courses (on self-discipline, habits, and decision-making). Why I Do It? ------------ It’s simple. The content I produce is to help you escape the hedonic treadmill and find direction in this seemingly directionless world. While the world is becoming a better place for learning new things. As information becomes more abundant, it’s getting harder and harder to find, digest, and make sense of it all. Naturally, and sadly, instead of using the resources online to gain, we settle for mindless scrolling. My end goal? Prompt you to start questioning the societal beliefs glorifying flashy trends and instant pleasures, so you can adopt an approach to living that’s almost rebellious in its patience. Who Am I? --------- I’m a 30+ years old guy living with a girl in Eastern Europe. I’m a co-founder of a baby boy. I read. I write. I wash dishes. And occasionally, though I mainly read digital books now, I go to the local library to get physical copies. What can I say, I have a thing for hardcover books and bookstores. Some might say that I’m a blogger, a writer even, but after spending $2,500+ on books and more than 4 years organizing my notes (publishing over 100 book summaries), I consider myself more a librarian than a blog owner. If you’re new here, you can read more about my website and subscribe to my newsletter fostering long-term thinking using the form below: Drop Your Email So I Can Flood Your Inbox ----------------------------------------- Just kidding. If you’re fed up with the endless, mind-numbing fluff cluttering the world wide web, my thoughts might seem like a rare moment of clarity. _The usual disclaimer where I share that I won’t sell your data and that I won’t spam you. Yes, no spam and no selling. Just genuine content._

April 19, 2025 -------------- A patchwork of Clang patches ---------------------------- Clang 20 was released in early March. But there is no rest for the wicked; Clang 21 is poised for a release in September. While we are hard at work on C++23, C++26, and C23 features, I am also trying to find some time to work on miscellaneous bits and bobs. I figured I should talk about some of them even if it’s all listed in the in-progress changelog, which we do our best to keep as accurate as possible. Read more November 29, 2024 ----------------- Legacy Safety: The Wrocław C++ Meeting -------------------------------------- Someone was giving away stickers reading “Somebody Should Do Something” at the WG21 C++ Standardization meeting held in Wrocław last week, and it makes for a pretty good tagline for that meeting. We are one meeting away from calling C++26 feature complete. The draft will be sent to National Bodies this summer. After that, we will have a couple of meetings to fix bugs and then wait for ISO to publish the official standard, which might take a year or two. Read more December 11, 2022 ----------------- If we must, let’s talk about safety ----------------------------------------- How would you put a 69 meters long, 50 meters tall, 1210 tonnes ship in a museum? A boat so large and so great it sank 100 meters into her maiden voyage? Well, you can’t. But, if you really wanted to build a monument to hubris, unsound engineering requirements, and design by kingship, you could design and build a museum around the Vasa. Entombed in concrete, the Vasa will never sail again Read more November 25, 2022 ----------------- Soursop and Ponies in Kona: A C++ Committee Trip Report ------------------------------------------------------- Earlier this month, the C++ committee meeting had its penultimate meeting of the C++23 cycle. It was also the first in-person meeting of the C++23 cycle. This means that C++23 was mostly designed over zoom. Which, sadly, explains in part why the language side of things has been rather stagnant these past couple of years. But a lot of things happened in Kona. I forgot how intense these things were. Read more July 16, 2022 ------------- Augeas ------ C++ is not done yet. Read more September 20, 2020 ------------------ What is the standard Library? ----------------------------- DISCLAIMER The following represent my opinions, not that of the C++ committee (WG21), any of its members or any other person mentioned in this article. I think the most fundamental work done by WG21 is trying to answer meta-questions about itself. What is C++, what is its essence, what should we focus on? How to evolve a language with a growing community, a growing committee? A language that is deployed on billions of devices, with an estimated 50 billions actively maintained lines of code. Read more

(Last updated: April 16, 2025) ------------------------------ Below is a list (in random order so as not to convey a false favoritism which I haven't even decided on yet) of some topics that I find interesting at the moment. These are things I'm either currently learning about, working with, or have slated to get more involved with in the near future. Some have links to pages on this site with more detail. The list will be updated semi-regularly. Maybe. * **GrapheneOS** - I've used an iPhone for the past ~15 years - until 2024 when I switched to GrapheneOS, a 'de-Googled' Android. I have no regrets and am pretty certain I'll never go back. Nearly all of the remote services I connect to on the phone are either self-hosted or decentralized and privacy-respecting. For the rare occassions where I need to use a Google service or some other vampire platform, I do so in an isolated user profile. * **Nostr** - I've deleted my Twitter/X account and went Nostr-only. I encourage you to join me. my npub: npub19ma2w9dmk3kat0nt0k5dwuqzvmg3va9ezwup0zkakhpwv0vcwvcsg8axkl * **Austrian Economics and the _Technology_ of Money** - _Economics in One Lesson_, Hazlitt; _What has Government Done to Our Money?_, Rothbard; _Broken Money_, Alden; _Praxeology_, Svanholm; _The Road To Serfdom_, Hayek. Etc. * **Stoicism** - Currently and recently reading: _Meditations_, Marcus Aurelius and _The Stoic Guide to a Happy Life_, Massimo Pigliucci. Also _Republic_, Plato. * **Agorism and Voluntaryism** - This topic is too big to summarize here, but I hope to have links to some writing of mine on the topic soon. Suffice it to say for now: I believe all human interactions should be 100% voluntary. Coercion is the supreme moral infraction - perhaps the only one, actually. * **Zettelkasten notes and thought-organization** - This continues to be a crucial part of my intellectual life. I have an enormous database of markdown notes that encompass journal entries, book notes, blog post drafts, internal-twitter, essay-writing for personal use, technical notes and documentation, etc. * * * ### Graveyard Down here are the things that eventually get bumped out of the 'currently' list. I have a mild infatuation with archiving thoughts and experiences, so I don't want to get rid of them altogether. More accurately, a lot of these are still deeply interesting to me, but I like to keep the above list fresh :) They'll just grow and fester down here in the land of _"things I was once currently interested in"_. * **Mechanical Keyboards** - In what is turning out to be a true nerd-path of text-editing-enthusiasm, I've developed an unhealthy interest in (and collection of) mechanical keyboards. This enthusiasm blemish is threatening to swell into a full-blown obsession abscess as I'm starting to eyeball self-built, fully-custom keyboards...help. The closest I've gotten to custom is The Atreus, which I've built and enjoyed for a while but I didn't dedicate the time and energy to remapping my muscle memory and had to give up on it for now. Still highly recommended. _This is getting Graveyarded. Still a great love, like most of the other stuff in the graveyard, but other things are more important._ * **Plaintext markdown workflow** - This one isn't new, but I'm always refining it. The general idea is using Dropbox-synced, plaintext files for everything: journaling, todo lists, records where I've stored objects, drafts for blog posts, etc. I use Drafts and 1Writer on iOS and vim everywhere else. * **Ruby Sinatra framework** - After spending so much time working with Rails on a daily basis, Sinatra is a really wonderfully simple and able framework. My drawing blog and this site are both built with Sinatra. _Graveyard. I still love sinatra, but it's not a new interest._ * **Bodyweight Fitness** - I have been following a bodyweight fitness routine lately. I'm a novice, so I'm not going to define it too narrowly - but it mostly means exercises that primarily use your bodyweight for resistance (push-ups, pull-ups, squats, etc). I've quickly become convinced that everything else good in life flows from a solid foundation of physical fitness. * **Drums** - Now that I have space at my own house to play the drums I've been paying more attention to re-learning them _correctly_ this time. Big thanks to Greg Fox for some very crucial tutelage. _This is unfortunately on hold until my drums are set up again_ * **Urbit** - I'm still very connected to the Urbit community, but I no longer work on it directly. I do, however, believe in The SSI as a category of technology. Urbit's general innovation there is the reason I'm working on vaporware * **The inevitable abyss that awaits us all** - I don't _want_ to be interested in this one, but I don't seem to be able to ignore it :-/ _Heh, I put 'death' in the 'graveyard'._ * **Meditation** - I used to rely on the Headspace iOS app to get into and keep on track with meditation. I've since moved to a simple timer and it's working just as well. _This is now a daily habit_ * **Vim + tmux workflow** - Nothing about using a computer has ever felt this comfortable and flow-inducing. _Like many other things in the Graveyard, this has just been deeply ingrained into my life such that it doesn't feel like an 'interest' anymore._ * **Sesame Street** - I'm not sure I was ever super into this show, but I wanted to have something here in the graveyard. This is a joke. ha _This used to be here when the graveyard was otherwise empty. Now it's filling up with the corpses of previous interests... I'm gonna leave this here anyway though (see above comment about infatuation with archiving)_ * **Gardening (specifically vegetable gardening)** - Since moving to a place with some land I've finally been able to fulfill a lifelong desire to augment some portion of my diet with plants I've grown from seeds in my own dirt. * **Information Security and Privacy** - Having become overcome with an extreme laziness just this moment - potentially encouraged by lack of caffeine as I'm cutting out coffee currently - I don't feel like writing further details on this one. You know what I mean _Graveyard! This is one of those things that, once you're interested in it enough to get on top of it, you can sort of stop being so interested in and coast on your knowledge. Until quantum computers, I guess._ * **Deep Work** - See Cal Newport for more. * **Mesh Networking** - I've been volunteering with NYC Mesh recently and am very excited about the potential for the project. Come to a meetup! Send me an email and ask me more about it! _this is now in the graveyard... I'm still very interested in this, but I've been too busy to keep involved lately. I'll get back into soon, I hope._ * **Nihilism and Freedom** - See my blog for more details. It's funny how many thoughts one can have about the idea that 'meaning' is objectively nonsensical, but my innate feelings about this topic inform a lot of my other thought processes. * **Consciousness** - I'm currently reading Daniel Dennett's _Consciousness Explained_. A tall order, but all of Dennett's work is always amazing, so I have high hopes. I've always been interested in the idea of Self (and tangentially in meditation) and am studying it indefinitely * **Plunder** - Plunder is a fantastic Solid State Interpreter and the VM that powers the vaporware network. I'm helping bring it to market * **Linux** - I finally installed Arch on something. Next goal: linux from scratch :) Since late 2016 I've been using Ubuntu almost exclusively. I think I can say I finally broke my OS X addiction and won't be depending on Apple's hardware anymore either In 2020 I bought a non-Apple laptop for the first time ever and officially am free from Apple in hardware and OS. _This is just my daily computing experience on all devices. It's no longer a 'hot topic', it's just what computers are, for me._

Cloudflare Pagesにおける権限昇格と任意ページの改竄 --------------------------------- You can read about these vulnerabilities in English at https://ec0.io/post/hacking-cloudflare-pages-part-2/ 免責事項 ---- Cloudflareは、HackerOne上で脆弱性報奨金制度(Bug Bounty)を実施しており、脆弱性の診断行為を許可しています。 DOM-based race condition: racing in the browser for fun -------------------------------------------------------  2023-10-29  2099 字  タグはありません Disclaimer ---------- All projects mentioned in this blog post have been contacted, and I confirmed that the behavior described in this article is either working as intended, already fixed, or will not be fixed. TL;DR ----- The browser loads elements in the HTML from top to bottom, and some JavaScript libraries retrieve data or attributes from the DOM after the page has been completely loaded. Because of how the `contenteditable` attribute works, we might have a race condition in applications that use those JavaScript libraries with the `contenteditable` element, depending on how the page loads the library. In this article, I’ll explain how it’s possible and how to increase the timing window of this race. GitHub Actionsにおける設定ミスに起因したGitHubスタッフのアクセストークン漏洩 ------------------------------------------------ (You can read this article in English here.) Stealing GitHub staff's access token via GitHub Actions ------------------------------------------------------- (この記事は日本語でも読むことが出来ます。) Disclaimer ---------- GitHub is running a bug bounty program on HackerOne, and as part of this program, vulnerability research is permitted by the safe harbor. This article describes a vulnerability that I discovered as a result of my investigation in compliance with the safe harbor criteria and is not intended to encourage unauthorized vulnerability research activities. If you find a vulnerability on GitHub, please report it to GitHub Bug Bounty. TL;DR ----- In the actions/runner repository, which hosts the source code for the GitHub Actions runner, there was a flaw in the usage of the self-hosted runner, which allowed me to steal the Personal Access Token from GitHub Actions. Since this token was tied to the GitHub staff account, I could perform various actions as a GitHub staff. This potentially allowed the insertion of malicious code into repositories such as actions/checkout and actions/cache, which might affect many repositories that use GitHub Actions. Arbitrary package tampering in Deno registry + Code Injection in encoding/yaml ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (この記事は日本語でも読むことが出来ます。) Disclaimer ---------- Deno Land Inc., which develops Deno, isn’t running bug bounty programs, so they don’t explicitly allow vulnerability assessments. This article describes the vulnerabilities that were reported as potential vulnerabilities, using publicly available information. This was done without actually exploiting/demonstrating the vulnerabilities and it’s not intended to encourage you to perform an unauthorized vulnerability assessment. If you find any vulnerabilities in Deno-related services/products, please report them to \[email protected\].1 Also, the information contained in this article may be inaccurate because the information of a vulnerability couldn’t be validated.2 TL;DR ----- I found a vulnerability that could be used to read arbitrary files from the system running deno.land/x, and a Code Injection in `encoding/yaml` of Deno. Of these, if the vulnerability in deno.land/x was exploited, the AWS credentials used to store the module in S3 could be stolen, resulting in arbitrary package tampering in deno.land/x. Code Injection ------------------------------------------------------- (You can read this article in English too.) Tampering with arbitrary packages in @types scope of npm -------------------------------------------------------- Preface ------- Definitely Typed, a project which manages npm packages inside the @types scope, is supported by Microsoft. However, it is not in the scope of the safe harbor for Microsoft’s bug bounty program.1 This article describes the vulnerabilities that were reported as potential vulnerabilities, using publicly available information. This was done without actually exploiting / demonstrating the vulnerabilities. This article is not intended to encourage you to perform an unauthorized vulnerability assessment. If you find any vulnerabilities in Definitely Typed related products, please report them to members of Definitely Typed. TL;DR ----- There were vulnerabilities in the pull request management bot of Definitely Typed, which allowed an attacker to merge a malicious pull request into DefinitelyTyped/DefinitelyTyped. This would result in tampering with arbitrary packages under the @types scope of npm.

CES 2025 underscored transformative advancements in AI, high-performance computing (HPC), digital twins, and sustainable technologies—areas that directly align with my professional goals to amplify technological research and innovation capabilities. A key observation was the growth in AI’s integration since 2024, with a noticeable push to incorporate AI into products across industries. While AI is widely recognized as a game-changer, its execution often focuses on enhancing customer experience and product customization. There was a palpable sense that booths without AI were considered irrelevant. As with many hype-cycle innovations, AI’s potential is undeniable, but its current application frequently feels like a solution searching for a problem. **AI and Consumer Tech Integration** NVIDIA’s unveiling of the GeForce RTX GPUs and the expansion of Agentic AI capabilities represent a significant leap in computational efficiency and real-time assistance. These advancements are vital for enhancing HPC and AI-driven analytics. Additionally, NVIDIA’s partnerships to integrate their chipsets and AI technologies into autonomous vehicles signal the growing convergence of AI and automotive innovation. The next challenge lies in establishing universal safety and operational standards across industries to ensure these technologies evolve responsibly. **Digital Twins and Sustainability** Emerging wearables and AI-driven AR/VR devices continue to leverage AI for health monitoring and vision augmentation, demonstrating the increasing adoption of digital twin concepts in consumer technology. This trend parallels goals for expanding digital twins in research labs to drive operational efficiency and data-informed decision-making. Agricultural innovations, such as John Deere’s autonomous tractors and Kubota’s AI-powered precision tools, highlight the potential for digital twins to enhance sustainability. These developments offer opportunities to explore safety standards and frameworks for digital thread technologies that train and refine autonomous AI systems. **Smart Infrastructure and Automation** Honda’s EV models and BMW’s Panoramic iDrive reflect advancements in smart infrastructure and connected systems. These innovations resonate with efforts to integrate AI into cloud-based infrastructure and operational processes. Ensuring safety and privacy in these interconnected systems remains a critical focus. **Takeaways for 2025** CES 2025 emphasizes the importance of aligning AI, sustainable innovation, and advanced infrastructure to drive impactful outcomes. These trends present a growing demand signal and a clear foundation for achieving 2025 goals. As 2024 comes to a close, it’s a moment to reflect on a year of transformative progress and impactful initiatives within the realms of innovation and technology. This year marked significant strides in digital transformation, with a primary focus on advancing cloud-based infrastructure, AI-driven analytics, and process automation. These efforts not only enhanced operational efficiency but also laid the groundwork for scalable, future-ready systems. The Center of Innovation (COIN) solidified its role as a hub for creative problem-solving and impactful outcomes. Key initiatives emphasized research-centric technology solutions, leveraging emerging technologies to propel forward-thinking projects. This work underscored the power of innovation in driving meaningful change across industries. High-Performance Computing (HPC) took center stage, with the development of a comprehensive roadmap in partnership with TotalCAE. These advancements supported sophisticated research initiatives across UL’s five research institutes and set a new benchmark for computational excellence. The introduction of a digital twin for research labs demonstrated the convergence of technology and experimentation, fostering enhanced collaboration and data-driven decision-making. Engagement with external organizations also flourished. Acceptance into Evanta, participation in TechCrunch Disrupt, and involvement with Chicago Innovation strengthened our network and influence. Joining the ‘Ageless Innovators’ program and contributing to the Great Lakes ReNEW initiative showcased our commitment to regional sustainability and innovation. This year, the Research Computing Steering Committee was established to unify strategic goals across multiple disciplines. Moreover, milestones such as joining mHUB and being featured at the Gartner Symposium/XPO cemented our position as leaders in innovation. As we look ahead to 2025, the momentum we’ve built in 2024 serves as a testament to what’s possible when creativity, collaboration, and technology converge. Here’s to another year of innovation and impact! 🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 I am thrilled to share that I have been accepted into the 2025 Cohort 13 of Chicago Innovation’s Ageless Innovators program, a unique initiative that fosters intergenerational collaboration and innovation. Dr. Bronner’s isn’t just a soap company – it’s a living, breathing example of what ethical business can look like when it’s done with heart. Family-owned and radically transparent, this iconic brand blends sustainability, activism, and all-purpose magic into every bottle. From their famously versatile Castile soaps to their bold stance on social justice, fair trade sourcing, regenerative agriculture, and LGBTQ+ inclusion, Dr. Bronner’s has created a model that proves you don’t have to choose between doing good and doing well. With playful foam parties, deep global impact, and labels packed with philosophical musings, the company continues to inspire a new generation of conscious consumers. The word “natural” is plastered on everything from face creams to shampoos these days. For people seeking healthier, plant-based skincare, it sounds promising – but behind the green branding, there can be hidden costs and misconceptions. This article takes an honest, evidence-based look at the rise of the natural skincare trend and what many brands aren’t telling you. We’ll debunk marketing myths, decode misleading terms, highlight regulatory gaps, and show why natural isn’t always safer or better. As someone deeply passionate about natural living, and certified in organic skincare formulation and health coaching, I have witnessed firsthand how embracing plant-based ingredients can transform not just our skin, but our overall well-being. In a world flooded with synthetic lotions and chemical-laden potions, I find solace and strength in the simple, earth-born elements that have nourished humans for centuries. In this article, I look into why natural, vegan ingredients hold such power for health and beauty, and why moving away from synthetic, non-plant alternatives is one of the BEST gifts you can give your body and soul.

Skip to content * Home * Posts * Projects * About * Contact About Me #### About me I’ve been busy working in the world of interactive media since the early 90s. Before that, I was a cartoonist, a student, a rebellious teenager, a kid, an infant and an embryo. Before that, I can’t really say for sure, but I’d be happy to discuss the question at a later time. I’ve worked as an interactive art director, interface designer, user experience designer, creative consultant, web strategist, graphic artist, illustrator, and animator on projects for clients like Sony Pictures, Marvel Comics, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Max Planck Institute. If you catch me at the right time, I’m available to design websites, prototypes, mobile apps, branding packages, or just about anything else that requires a creative touch. Take a look at the portfolio to see some samples. Besides computer-related things, I’m also a writer, playwright, curator and generally curious person. In 1997, I started a non-profit arts organization called Trade City Productions as a way to unite my various pursuits and also help other artists present their work. Our most recent project was a mobile art and performance space called The Popwagon. Lately I’ve been leading up a project called Comingle which addresses economic instability by letting people share money to generate a basic income for each other. I currently reside in the pre-apocalyptic wonderland known as Los Angeles. I’m often accompanied by a fascinating wife, a fancy 16 year-old daughter, a charming 11 year-old son, a cat, and a tortoise. i like my clients ----------------- I’ve had the pleasure of working with a lot of great people and companies. Updated on the 9th of April 2025 Waiting, on the cusp of our second child being born. After a busy few months renovating the house and wading through illnesses brought back from preschool, there’s only a couple of things that actually _need_ to be done. It’s refreshing to wake up and not be faced by a mountain of To Do items. This will be the first year in a while where we’ve completed our renovation plans for the year before summer. I cannot express how happy I am that I’ll not be in a room stripping wallpaper in 30℃. I’m also on the edge of stability. After some last-minute renewals my latest contract bid is long or bust. I’ve learned a lot about keeping sanguine in the face of things I can’t change here – the tension between wanting to carefully plan finances for family changes and potentially being contract-free is certainly there, but the option of a summer off with a newborn isn’t a bad one. * * * This is a now page. If it’s old, hassle me on social media.
