Iā€™m thrilled to share that I recently had the privilege of participating in the first-ever Research Symposium hosted by the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME) at the University of Chicago. Along with being asked to judge the presentations and research posters as an industry partner with fellow colleagues from Ā AbbVie,Ā Ecolab,Ā Hollister Incorporated. This event marked a significant milestone in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in molecular engineering and related fields. The symposium brought together researchers, scholars, and industry leaders to discuss groundbreaking advancements and explore new frontiers in science and engineering. It was an inspiring experience to engage with fellow participants, exchange ideas, and learn about the cutting-edge research being conducted at PME. During the symposium, I had the opportunity to learn about advanced research and engaged in great discussions regarding the research being conducted at the PME. The diverse range of topics and the dynamic discussions underscored the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in solving complex global challenges. I am grateful to PME for hosting such a stimulating and enriching event and look forward to continuing my collaboration with this vibrant community of innovators. For more details about the event, you can read the official announcement from PME here. ā€œItā€™s a pipeline for talent. It brings in new ideas and new research partnerships,ā€ said UL Director, Innovation & Technology,Ā Craig Hamill. ā€œWe have our own scale of work, but universities have larger scale, larger partnerships, bringing in more and more ideas. They have more interdisciplinary pathways.ā€ Being recognized as part of the Project Ascend team for winning the 2024 Innovation & Impact Award is amazing.Ā  With ULRI and ULSE building a new IT infrastructure, the Project Ascend team successfully migrated all relevant business applications to the new IT environment to meet the evolving needs of employees and advance our mission. Team members went above and beyond their usual roles and responsibilities to ensure that the resulting solutions met our organizationā€™s IT requirements and positioned us for future growth. Earlier this month, I had the privilege of attending theĀ **38th BEYA Conference**Ā in Baltimore. It was a convergence of brilliance, innovation, and diversityā€”a true celebration of what makes STEM thrive. **Key Takeaways**: 1. **Diversity Unleashes Magic**: BEYA38 reinforced that diversity isnā€™t just a buzzword; itā€™s the secret sauce for groundbreaking innovation. When minds from different backgrounds collide, magic happens. The energy in those conference halls was electric! 2. **New Connections**: Meeting fellow professionals, visionaries, and rising stars was invigorating. The talent pool was vast, and the conversationsā€”priceless. 3. **UL Research Institutes**: At our modest booth, we proudly introduced UL Research Institutesā€™ contributions to safety science. ULRI strives to tangibly save lives through research and innovationā€”thatā€™s the heart of STEM. Witnessing that spark ignite in students and professionals as we discussed ULRIā€™s mission was incredibly rewarding. **BEYA39 Awaits!**: If you missed BEYA38 this year, fear not! Mark your calendar for next yearā€™sĀ **BEYA39**Ā event. Trust me, itā€™s an experience you wonā€™t want to miss. Letā€™s continue championing diversity and shaping the future of STEM together! Iā€™ll be attending CES Las Vegas this year. Please reach out if youā€™d like to meet up at CES to discuss tech and what I am working on/researching for ULRI. * * * Updated Post CES. What a whirlwind week in Las Vegas. CES was massive and there is so much to unwrap. Some of the major overall themes: * AI in everything.Ā  Not sure if this is good, bad or indifferent. Just seems that everyone is adding ā€˜AIā€™ to their products. Seemingly not understanding the value added, but itā€™s the buzz. * The suspicious overload of ā€˜thingsā€™ in all products. I am seeing a theme that is starting to push toward this trend of a subscription-based model for all electronics. * Lots of automotive tech and autonomous driving tech. Looks really cool and promising, but woof the tech is still in its infancy. * Autonomous robotics (vacuums, pool cleaners, lawnmowers, delivery vehicles) may be really ready for primetime for larger-scale deployment. * Solid State Batteries ā€“ still massively concerned about battery tech and battery safety as more companies are building high-capacity battery modules. Honored to speak to theĀ World Economic ForumĀ ā€“ Global Collaboration Village Ambassador Meeting today on howĀ UL Research InstitutesĀ intends to leverage digital twins for enhanced learning withĀ Xplorlabs.org. The Inaugural Annual Research Symposium of UL Research Institutes, held from July 31 to August 2, 2023, at Northwestern Universityā€™s Kellogg Global Hub, proved to be an inspiring and thought-provoking event. The 3-day symposium featured engaging panel discussions and presentations from esteemed internal and external speakers, all centered around the theme of ā€œBuilding resilience for a sustainable futureā€ ā€“ ULā€™s 1st Grand Challenge Commitment. We discuss digital safety, which is an extension of social media, and his work in creating standards and guidelines to ensure that technology is used responsibly. He is also working on building the lab of the future and driving innovation to create a better world. We discuss the potential issues of digital safety, privacy, and transparency that come with the development of AI and ML tools, such as Generative AI models, deep fakes, and Quantum Computing. He highlights the need for standards and safety to protect people from exploitation and misinformation. People are increasingly looking to trust companies and brands with their data in exchange for services and products, but transparency is key in order to ensure that the data is not being misused or sold to third parties. Companies should also provide the option for people to delete their data if they are not comfortable with it being used. We discuss the importance of transparency and accountability when it comes to data and technology, as well as the need for fact-checking and proofreading. We also discuss the implications of taking information at face value, the need for digital safety, and his hope for Data Privacy in the future. Updated April 28, 2024

This is a (very much) incomplete list of ideas that have been roaming around in my head, roughly sorted by stage. It is up to date as of April 28th,Ā 2024. The way I see it in my mind is that projects start off in the _ideation_Ā šŸ’” stage, move on the _prototyping_Ā šŸŒ± stage, and then eventually moves on to the _build_Ā šŸ—ļø stageā€Šā€”ā€Šunless it gets put _on hold_Ā šŸ„€. See also: About Ideas Now SoftwareĀ projects ----------------- Software, whether open-source orĀ not. ### Build a budgetingĀ app **Stage**: On holdĀ šŸ„€ See Budgeting app prototype. It is something Iā€™ve been working on on-and-off for a longĀ time. ### Build a personal databaseĀ app **Stage**: IdeationĀ šŸ’” Such an app would allow writing down data in a structured format with all the benefits that come from it: custom queries, custom views. It would also allow exporting to different formats, including HTML for inclusion on webĀ sites. Similar to FileMaker, Bento, TapForms, Steward, AirTable, NotionĀ databases. The app would ideally be local-first, with cloud sync available, and the data format would need to be open (or good export options would need to be available, but thatā€™s lessĀ interesting). UseĀ cases: * **Personal library**: What books do I have? What have I borrowed from people? What have I lent toĀ people?) * **Job search**: What jobs have I applied to? What is the status? Is there anything I need to do to progress particularĀ applications? * **Reading list**: What books do I want to read? What have people recommended me? What am I reading right now? What have I read and what did I think aboutĀ it? * **Recipe list**: What are the recipes that I like to make and want to share withĀ others? ### Build presentationĀ software **Stage**: IdeationĀ šŸ’” I like Keynote, but it sometimes feels limiting and awkward, especially in the way it supports builds and animation. Iā€™d like something moreĀ advanced. I donā€™t know what technology Iā€™d use forĀ that. ### Build a color paletteĀ designer **Stage**: IdeationĀ šŸ’” I have my own hacked-together set of color palette designers that I use on denisdefreyne.com, but polishing that into an app could be really nice. Does not have to be an _app_ necessarily; could be an online toolĀ too. ### Build a feature flagĀ service **Stage**: IdeationĀ šŸ’” There are few open-source feature flag services out there, and the ones that exist are just not good. I could definitely whip up something better, but itā€™s unlikely to happen because Iā€™d only really feature flag systems in a workĀ contextā€¦ ### Build a production changeĀ tracker **Stage**: IdeationĀ šŸ’” Keeping track of changes to production is useful for debugging, auditing and postmortem construction. What is deployed and when? What changes to feature flags have been made, by whom and when? See also: Project idea: Captainā€™s log. ### Build a development environment setupĀ tool **Stage**: IdeationĀ šŸ’” The tooling at Shopify is remarkable, and especially the `dev up` command is magic, as it sets up an entirely developmentĀ environment. I have since reimplemented the `dev` tool at a later company,111 I wrote about this `dev` tool reimplementation in WeekĀnotes 2022 W34: Insomnia and then later in WeekĀnotes 2022 W45: Burn II.Ā  but it is intellectual property of that company and since leaving222 I wrote about leaving this company in WeekĀnotes 2024 W04: End of work.Ā  I no longer have access to it. I miss it! I need to reimplement it again and share it with theĀ world! This tool would not use Docker. On macOS, Docker is far too slow to provide a reasonable feedbackĀ loop. ### Create a programmingĀ language **Stage**: IdeationĀ šŸ’” I have started on this so many times, because it is just plain old funā€Šā€”ā€Šat least at the beginning, and then it gets remarkably tedious.Ā Heh. But still, there is potential in creating a programming language that is different from anything else out there. Maybe a programming language with no globals? Non-fictionĀ writing ------------------- Articles, books, talks, and theĀ like. ### Write a ā€œhow to memoizeā€Ā article **Stage**: IdeationĀ šŸ’” This would be an article reflecting on the learnings I had writing a memoization library (ddmemoizeā€Šā€”ā€Šnow abandoned). I already gave a talk in a similar vein, How to memoize, though this article would reflect more on the weird/unusual bits of Ruby knowledge that I gained in theĀ process. Topics that this would cover: metaprogramming, `#freeze`, thread safety, weak references and soft references,Ā metrics. ### Write a ā€œhow to code reviewā€Ā article **Stage**: IdeationĀ šŸ’” It is an established practice to do code reviews, but there is a lack of clarity on how to do it, and why to do it. Some practices are counterintuitive (e.g. the purpose of code review is not to find defects). This might be part of a larger collection of writing on software engineering principles. ### Write software engineeringĀ principles **Stage**: IdeationĀ šŸ’” This is an extension of the previous idea on writing down my practices on doing code reviews. See also: software engineering principles. ### Create a ā€œbuild a programming languageā€Ā talk **Stage**: IdeationĀ šŸ’” In about 30 minutes, this talk would run through creating a programming language and writing a (tree-walking) interpreter for it. It wouldnā€™t be a _great_ programming language at the end of those 30 minutes, but the talk would touch on most of the core concepts (tokenizer, parser, symbol resolver,Ā evaluator). Miscellaneous ------------- Stuff that doesnā€™t fitĀ elsewhere. ### Build a new aboutĀ page **Stage**: PrototypingĀ šŸŒ± My personal web site has a homepage which has a _little_ bit about myself, but really not very much. Iā€™d like something that contains just a lotĀ more. Who am I? What am I interested in? What have I done in the past? What drives me? What do I want to doĀ next? See About (brainstorming). ### Convert my CV to beĀ skill-based **Stage**: PrototypingĀ šŸŒ± My current CV lists my experience, and ā€œcore skillsā€ to the side. It does not properly highlight the skills I have (and want to use); it uses work experience as a mediocreĀ proxy. A skill-based CV could be much more interesting. This could tie into Skills I have. The work experience would still be there, but perhaps secondary. (Hopefully it does not bring my CV to three pages, but it in all likelihoodĀ will.) ### Publish myĀ library **Stage**: IdeationĀ šŸ’” Publish a list of books that I own and have read. Maybe also books that I want to read. Perhaps also add reviews of books I haveĀ read. This would be nice because people could then ask ā€œcan I borrow this bookā€ and then I could lend them the book. I could even mark books as ā€œto giveĀ away.ā€ This could include not just books, but also movies, TV shows, and games, though that might push the scope aĀ little. It could be neat to publish this in a computer-readable format too: see Library JSON - A Proposal for a Decentralized Goodreads (TomĀ Critchlow). ### Create a new default Nanoc siteĀ template **Stage**: IdeationĀ šŸ’” When you run Nanocā€™s `create-site` command, you get a web site that looks like itā€™s straight from the early 2010sā€Šā€”ā€Šprobably because it is. The HTML is not great, the CSS is quite dated, and the design is notĀ mobile-friendly.333 In my defense, maybe that is because Nanoc is older than the iPhone. Nanoc is old. Ancient, even. But still relevant inĀ 2024!Ā  A new default template could be useful. Or even a set of default templates that you could choose from: a minimal site (sort of what it generates now), or something more advanced like a personal web site with blog posts written inĀ Markdown. These are loose thoughts about the future: crazy ideas I'm mulling over, changes I wish to manifest, and interesting things I've noticed. My creative values ------------------ In the pursuit of a definite, intentional creative identity, I find myself drawn to these values for my work: * Enrich, donā€™t just distract * Have a fearless point of view * Embrace darkness, but inspire growth * Ideas have power regardless of whether they're true Audience -------- I want to make work for kind people. Thatā€™s too broad for any kind of real market positioning, but itā€™s a start. If an audience is a set of people you invite into your creative life, I donā€™t want to invite toxic, entitled, mean-spirited people. I want to invite kind people, who: * Understand the value of the arts * Find new ideas more interesting than dangerous * Feel in community with each other as members of this group of people who like this thing Independence ------------ Iā€™d like to reach a point where Iā€™m no longer beholden to an employer in order to live. Thatā€™s not just a luxury: I think itā€™s actually becoming a necessity in order for me to have the kind of lifestyle, and build the kind of identity, that I want to have. Assumptions ----------- We tend to assume the corporate career will be successful (financial stability) while the artistic career will be a failure (financial risk). Why do we make those assumptions? What does it take to disprove those assumptions? Making space for art -------------------- It feels like the way forward is less about figuring out how to make money by making art, and more about how to make money _while leaving space for art._ > This page was inspired by About Ideas Now

June 2024 --------- **I recently stepped away from game development after a 20-year run. I'm taking a breather before starting an earnest exploration into a career pivot.** Reading books like Herminia Ibarra's Working Identity and Joanne Lipman's Next! reveals a pattern in people who made successful career pivots: they were transitioning _toward_ something, not _away_ from something. **I find myself leaning strongly toward storytelling.** Games have afforded me very few shots on that goal. It's time to try something different! Also, my wife and I had a baby last year, and we're looking forward to spending more time together with him and the other kids for the rest of the summer. 2024-04-28 * Thinking of buying some clear resin to see if my u/w magnifying math is accurate: I can 3D print the biconvex lenses, smooth the printing with spray lacquer, and get a _sense_. It won't be usable quality, I wouldn't think, but the curves aren't insane, even for a material with a lower refractive index. 2024-04-14 * My latest stupid idea is an underwater magnifying glass. Normal magnifying glasses don't work well underwater because seawater has a refractive index of 1.33 and common optical acrylics and glass are only ~1.50. There used to be a company in Belgium that sold an u/w magnifier for around $150 and you had to wait in line to get one, but they seem to have gone out of business. The math is pretty straightforward and so I've put an RFP out on Alibaba.

bind mounts are what iā€™m accustomed to using for local docker dev. theyā€™re the typical go to for being able to use host-native dev tooling to edit source code and ensuring that those changes are immediately reflected in the container environment. they work fine, for the most part. my biggest issue with them has always \[ā€¦\] in java, if you want to generate a set of classes, you have to write a class that can output strings that will ultimately represent a valid java program. at runtime, you may have a method called generateObject that accepts some arguments and outputs the blueprint of a class. the output will be strings or \[ā€¦\] the expression problem states that it may be easy to extend data types in a program without modifying existing code and it may be easy to extend behavior in a program without modifying existing code, but not both. this limit, as far as i know, is a limit imposed by the design of the underlying \[ā€¦\] A common task I use for react is rendering large datasets in the UI. > ā€˜Drink your tea slowly and reverently, as if it is the axis on which the world earth revolves.ā€™ **\-Thich Nhat Hanh** Zen Habits is about finding simplicity and mindfulness in the daily chaos of our lives. I live in Northern California with my wife and our two teenage kids (we have 4 adult kids, for a total of six!), where I eat vegan food, write, run, and read.
