Hi, I'm Jesse. I'm an osteopathic medical student in South Florida. I was born and raised in Dallas, TX. I graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin, where I met my wife, Susie. After college, I spent 2 years working for a healthcare tech start-up company before starting medical school in July 2021. I plan to apply for residency in Diagnostic Radiology and begin in 2025. I'm inspired by books like The Mindbody Connection by John Sarno, MD and The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk, MD. I find the power of the mind fascinating in its ability to exacerbate — and even manifest — physical disorders. I started this website because I enjoy helping others succeed by sharing my strategies. I hope that readers find some value in what I write. Please consider subscribing to my email list below to receive my new articles straight to your inbox :)

_My Now page was inspired by_ _Derek Sivers__. Learn more about a Now page,_ _here__._ * * * _Last updated July 25, 2024 in Hallandale, Florida_ ### Medical School I am a fourth year osteopathic medical student (OMS-IV) preparing to apply for residency in Diagnostic Radiology. As I type this, I am completing my core Emergency Medicine rotation. Afterwards, I have some radiology electives lined up which I'm stoked about! I recently returned from the Florida Radiological Society (FRS) conference in Orlando, FL, where I presented my research poster on the topic of using tissue bioelectric property measurements in differentiating between benign and malignant breast tumors. These novel technologies show promise in decreasing invasive biopsy procedures, particularly in BIRADS 0 and 3. ### Blog I haven't published anything new in a while. As a new father, I've discovered that I _might_ have time to do one extracurricular thing each day, outside of school and responsibilities related to being a husband and father. I usually choose to exercise, but I'm really itching to start writing more often again. ### Reading I recently finished reading The Four-Hour Body by Tim Ferriss. I was inspired to get my body back after taking both COMLEX and USMLE 2 exams. I'm about two weeks into the _Slow-Carb Diet_ for fat loss, and I'm just beginning _Occam's Protocol_ for gaining muscle mass. At night, I am reading Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert, the 2nd book in the Dune series, on my Kindle. ### Family My daughter just turned 1-years-old. My girls are my world. 🌎 ### Non-exhaustive Bucket List: * Write a book related to medicine & wellness * Try jiu-jitsu * Learn how to draw/paint * Run a marathon in less than 4 hours * * *

These are loose thoughts about the future: crazy ideas I'm mulling over, changes I wish to manifest, and interesting things I've noticed. My creative values ------------------ In the pursuit of a definite, intentional creative identity, I find myself drawn to these values for my work: * Enrich, don’t just distract * Have a fearless point of view * Embrace darkness, but inspire growth * Ideas have power regardless of whether they're true Audience -------- I want to make work for kind people. That’s too broad for any kind of real market positioning, but it’s a start. If an audience is a set of people you invite into your creative life, I don’t want to invite toxic, entitled, mean-spirited people. I want to invite kind people, who: * Understand the value of the arts * Find new ideas more interesting than dangerous * Feel in community with each other as members of this group of people who like this thing Independence ------------ I’d like to reach a point where I’m no longer beholden to an employer in order to live. That’s not just a luxury: I think it’s actually becoming a necessity in order for me to have the kind of lifestyle, and build the kind of identity, that I want to have. Assumptions ----------- We tend to assume the corporate career will be successful (financial stability) while the artistic career will be a failure (financial risk). Why do we make those assumptions? What does it take to disprove those assumptions? Making space for art -------------------- It feels like the way forward is less about figuring out how to make money by making art, and more about how to make money _while leaving space for art._ > This page was inspired by About Ideas Now

2024-04-28 * Thinking of buying some clear resin to see if my u/w magnifying math is accurate: I can 3D print the biconvex lenses, smooth the printing with spray lacquer, and get a _sense_. It won't be usable quality, I wouldn't think, but the curves aren't insane, even for a material with a lower refractive index. 2024-04-14 * My latest stupid idea is an underwater magnifying glass. Normal magnifying glasses don't work well underwater because seawater has a refractive index of 1.33 and common optical acrylics and glass are only ~1.50. There used to be a company in Belgium that sold an u/w magnifier for around $150 and you had to wait in line to get one, but they seem to have gone out of business. The math is pretty straightforward and so I've put an RFP out on Alibaba.

Updated July 27, 2024

I’m known as Seirdy, or as Rohan/Cadmus (interchangeable). There are some differences between these two personas, but the line between the two is blurry. It’s fine to mix them up. Yes, I’m plural! It’s no secret, but I don’t usually show it. I haven’t yet come up with a system name. This page lists my most relevant accounts. A more comprehensive list of my online accounts is available via WebFinger: acct:seirdy@seirdy.one. Any currently-active public account not listed via WebFinger isn’t actually me; please let me know if you find one. I’ve published a version of my OpenPGP key via Web Key Directory; this version has notations containing Ariadne identity proofs for a few more accounts of mine. You can verify those accounts on any Keyoxide instance (requires JavaScript). I hope to migrate identity proofs to something besides OpenPGP in the future. Rohan/Cadmus: meatspace persona -------------------------------- I go by Rohan Kumar in “real life” (work, school, family, etc), or as Cadmus with friends. I intentionally make very delayed updates to information such as my location. I accept contributions from any of these platforms; use whichever you prefer. Seirdy: online persona ---------------------- I go by Seirdy online. I have multiple online personas, but Seirdy is my main one and the only one I feel comfortable associating with my meatspace persona. Seirdy is a bit of an abstract character, a bit less “professional” than Rohan and Cadmus. At least two platforms listed in the “Social (centralized)” category are not endorsed, and I’m trying to wind down my use of them. If you find a “Seirdy” somewhere else and don’t know whether or not it’s me, please contact me and ask instead of assuming that it must be me. I used to have the Matrix ID `@seirdy:envs.net`. Interests, preferences, et cetera --------------------------------- I ought to come up with more interests than these, but that sounds hard. ### Inclusive design I care a lot about accessibility, resource usage, and compatibility. My Web site may seem simple, but I put almost 20 thousand words of thought into its design in an effort to maximize its inclusivity. This site should work well whether you’re using Lynx, NetSurf, the Tor Browser with a screen reader, or a printout. Many people frame accessibility and compatibility in terms of “percentage of users impacted” to justify ignoring certain demographics. I find that this mindset somewhat discriminatory. I prefer framing concerns in terms of “populations excluded”. I have some skin in the game: I rely on forced colors and use often use screen readers for web browsing. This is a really helpful measure to reduce overstimulation, given my anxiety and ADHD. I encourage others in similar situations to try these measures. ### Collections I like to collect things online! Things I like to collect include: * Custom emotes * 88x31 buttons * Search engines * Probably more ### Software freedom While I care very much about “free software” (the name is confusing, it refers to freedom rather than price), I don’t share the same perspective as most “fossbros” and organizations like the FSF. Software freedom is important because it gives people agency instead of delegating control to an authority; it’s not valuable in and of itself, and promoting a “FOSS” alternative that has vulnerabilities and accessibility issues is sometimes counterproductive. I think that simply meeting GNU’s definition of free software isn’t enough: it’s one of multiple requirements for software to avoid the possibility of user domestication. ### Other tech stuff Other technology-related interests include security, privacy, and open platforms. I lean towards simplicity; I usually prefer line-mode command-line interfaces that follow the UNIX philosophy. If a piece of software is complex enough to require a funding round, I would rather avoid it. My reasons for preferring simplicity also relate to user autonomy: extremely complex software can’t be forked easily, creating dependence on the vendor. It’s also because I’m a bit paranoid and want to know everything that happens on my system. There are exceptions, of course: I use a Linux distro with Systemd (Fedora), after all. When I use a graphical program, it’s typically for things for which graphics are an inherent requirement or for accessibility reasons (most textual user interfaces don’t play well with screen readers). More information is available in my “uses” page. ### Anime I watch anime. Some of my favorites, in no particular order: * Pluto * Code Geass * Mawaru Penguindrum * No Game No Life: Zero * Darling in the Franxx * Black Lagoon * Serial Experiments Lain * Saga of Tanya the Evil * Attack on Titan * Violet Evergarden * To Your Eternity I think that at least one entry in that list has some problematic messages, but my personal interpretation was a bit unorthodox and it felt wrong to exclude it. ### Music I’ve put together a periodically-updated list of tracks that I’ve rated 8/10 or higher in my mpd stickers database, auto-generated by some of my mpd-scripts. I’m a fan of glitch, trailer music, and symphonic and power metal; I’ve also recently been getting into Japanese rock thanks to a few anime openings. Some of my favorite artists are The Glitch Mob, Pretty Lights, Beats Antique, Hammerfall, Badflower, Celldweller and Scandroid, Helloween, Two Steps from Hell, Nightwish, Mili, and MYTH & ROID.
