about ----- * * * Bienvenue, mes amis! I've always been fascinated by the idea of the Unreliable Narrator, and how memories and time change the stories you're _sure_ are true. In a way, any writing is only mostly true. Originally this started as a place to only tell stories, but I'm also using it as a digital garden for my thoughts and ideas about life and accessibility. My name is Tim Eaton, but all my friends call me Virgil. It's nice to have a real name that I chose, one that I always dreamt I was called. I stick with Tim for work and legal reasons, but Virgil is way more fun. A few things to know about me: I've spent my whole life traveling. My parents moved from Worcestor, where I was born, to Missouri and Vermont and New Hampshire and Pennsylvania. I left home for Spokane and Seattle, and found myself in nearly every city in the US, playing music and making friends. As I grew older, my circle expanded to include Ireland, The Philipines, France, China, Korea, Taiwan, Mexico, and Colombia. These days home is Switzerland, with my lovely wife Julie, and two cats, one old, one young and diabolical. There's also a roommate, her son, and her dog. We have a grand apartment together, near the Lake, 15 minutes from Geneva by train. Botched surgeries ended up with several years spent in the hospital as I turned 40, and now I use a wheelchair for my travels. This is new enough that I'm still processing all the implications. I try to work through them by writing about my thoughts and feelings on this blog. I fully expect them to change over time. Anger and despair do flair up, but in general I remain myself, curious and happy-go-lucky. > "Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won't come in."― Isaac Asimov I have been a writer and a programmer for most of my life, but I've had many jobs, from volunteer fireman to disaster relief, barista to chef, street musician to animal caretaker, day laborer to director to teacher - all around the world. During this time I've met many people and gathered many stories to tell. As for the rest, you'll discover that over time. I can't ever say no to an adventure, not even though I need a wheelchair now, so I'm going to sit and write about people and happenstances. Please enjoy! > "The love of wilderness is more than a hunger for what is always beyong reach; it is also an expression of loyalty to the earth, the earth which bore us and sustains us, the only paradise we shall ever know, the only paradise we ever need, if only we had the eyes to see." - Edward Abbey ### A note on AI: I never use AI to write, but I have found one prompt that I find very engaging and will continue to use. > _Acting as an editor, are you engaged by this story? Are there any confusing parts? If so, please explain._ The response is great, like notes from an editor. I find this to be ethical, because I use the notes (or ignore them) to rewrite entirely in my own words. I never use it to change or generate content. ### Colophon: I designed this site myself to be fluid and easy on the eyes, using Astro as the engine and Vercel for hosting. The only font used is Arvo, which I love for readability and headers. The main image was created with OpenAI, and any photographs will be attributed in the stories. I have an RSS feed if you'd rather view it in your own preferred program. If you or anyone you know need design or programming help, I charge on a sliding scale - anything from cups of coffee and a _pain au chocolat_ for bit of help, to hard Euros for corporate work. You can find my freelancer site at timeaton.dev. I'm more than happy to answer any questions you might have about building your own Astro site! I'm also thrilled to meet anyone who passes through Geneva, and emails from strangers make my day. ### Enjoying this? Let me know or send me a story via email. Send me your blog and I'll read it! now --- * * * This is what I'm currently working on, reading, and thinking about. Inspired by Derek Sivers' now page movement. ### currently working on * Learning some elements of digital game design, for fun (and profit?) * Getting a solid wheelie on my chair so I can jump onto/off sidewalks and other obstacles (skateboard?). * Heading to Italy for the first time, in two weeks! * Learning more songs in French - I'm being largely influenced by the Quebecois neo-folk scene, which is probably ruining my French pronunciation. ### currently reading * "The Bad Muslim Discount" by Syed M. Masood * "Chokepoint Capitalism" by Rebecca Giblin and Cory Doctorow * "The Anti-Ablist Manifesto" by Tiffany Yu ### currently thinking about * Ethics in AI - My takeaway comes down to "Ethics are good, I mostly like them." * How can I increase my French level? And what about Swiss German? In general, I'm continuing to learn how I can be myself in a wheelchair. So much of my history is based on adventure and climbing or running or walking... Now all of that is far more complicated. Often I respond to new things with a bit of rebellion even if I say "yes, our course!" This is no different. I'm not sure what I'm doing, but I'm doing it. I'm trying to maintain kindness and curiosity, and not immediately assume people are looking down at me or forgetting about me. Right now, this means giving my friends specific instructions about how to help me: don't touch without asking, or at least letting me know... Always take public transportation if possible because cars are much more painful... Try not to leave things in the doorway so I get trapped... And so forth. People need to keep being reminded, gently. ### because kindness is punk as hell. _Last updated: 14 julliet 2025. Vive la France!_ ### Enjoying this? Let me know or send me a story via email. Send me your blog and I'll read it! Subscribe to my newsletter. More of my stories are below. You can follow my feed, tip me a coffee on ko-fi, or move on to my favorite links. Thanks for visiting! My blog. It’s an E/N style blog. (Sidenote: The website’s content means everything to the publisher, but it could mean nothing to the rest of the world.) I often write about games but don’t limit posts to games. Please contact me if you’re so inclined. You can subscribe to my site’s Atom RSS feed, RSS XML feed, or JSON feed. I am available as a consultant for a variety of services . Or maybe you’d like to review my resume; I love what I do but that doesn’t mean I’m not open for other opportunities. I have published and sold some game materials . I release some content on this site as Open Game License (OGL 📖) . Checkout the different licenses I've published under . I do my best to tag posts and group some posts into series . You may be interested in my reviews , interviews , or session reports . I have created a Site Map page to help you navigate a site I’ve been maintaining since 2011. I also committed, for the time being, to host S John Ross’s Medieval Demographics Made Easy . You’ll notice that I link to a lot of games. I often use affiliate links; I choose this as one small way to get a bit of jingle for my blogging efforts. In working on this website, I’ve ensured it works _well_ without Javascript. (Sidenote: The site works without Javascript. When you enable javascript, the Search feature shifts using DuckDuckGo’s basic search to using a local LunrJS search. A nice feature of the LunrJS search is that I can the search on my local machine.) I’ve tried to build towards an accessible experience, referencing accessibility guidelines from Penn State. (Sidenote: Go to the top of the page, click the top left corner, then hit the TAB key. I love that feature. I learned that from a Skip Links accessibility tutorial.) This addressed an issue in Hugo’s `ExecuteAsTemplate`, which did not render absolute URLs. ### Mar 9, 2020 update Adding callout to Atom RSS feed and JSON feed ### Dec 17, 2019 update On December 16th, as an experiment, I tweaked my blog. First, I stopped using custom fonts. Instead, I’m using three long-standing fonts: Times, Courier, and Arial; I wanted to use Helvetica, but encountered an odd rendering issue beyond my skills. Second, I opted to inline the CSS files; Instead of referencing them as a link. Inlining the CSS added 14KB to each page. Both of these changes reduced the number of HTTP requests speeds up performance and improves the stability of the page. ### Oct 12, 2020 update I added a section on the available access keys for my site.

🙌 I’m Geoff, a principal developer advocate. A staff+ software and infrastructure engineer with a "Jack-of-All-Trades" background. People often ask what the heck a Developer Advocate is. Here's one way to explain it... > _"A software developer, a marketer, a branding manager, an integrations manager, a business development partner, a domain expert, a public speaker, an event manager, and a technical writer walk into a bar. He orders a glass of scotch. After all, it’s been a long day of jet-setting and hand-holding as a developer advocate."_ I deeply care about helping developers succeed with platforms or technology products that I care about. As a Developer Advocate, my role is to act as a bridge between organizational structures and the developer community. On an average day (TM), you'll find me shipping features alongside the engineering team, crafting code examples, curating communities, doctoring documentation, and acting as an internal advocate and feedback-getter.

My superpower is calming chaos. Hi! Thanks for being here. 😊 The foundation of my consulting practice and blog is based on my particular philosophy on productivity. **To me, productivity is about being intentional**. It's not about being a better worker bee or trying to squeeze more into each day. It's about knowing who and what's important and spending your precious time, energy, and attention on them. This philosophy is born out of some significant life experiences over the last 15 years, including: * Building and growing multiple businesses * Supporting my husband and business partner through cancer and recovery * Supporting our family through a close member's terminal illness and death * Living with Multiple Sclerosis and the impacts it has on my day-to-day * Navigating that whole pandemic thing ... and, of course, all the other normal ups and downs of life. I've learned a lot over the years, the most important being **time is not guaranteed**. Now, I help other entrepreneurs and business leaders: * Develop healthy habits and processes * Get clarity on their values * Spend time, energy and attention on truly what matters * Reduce and prevent burnout **My superpower is calming chaos. I would love to help you calm yours!** * * * The other stuff --------------- ### My background and experience * I have been a full-time entrepreneur since 2009. * I'm a co-founder of a software company called Code and Effect. We built UpsideAMS, association management software (AMS) for professional, regulatory, and member organizations. * I am a University of Alberta graduate with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Psychology. * I have been writing, coaching and speaking since 2016. * I was awarded an Avenue Magazine Top 40 Under 40 in 2017. * I completed the Roy Group’s The Practice of Coaching course in 2018. ### Volunteering * I mentor entrepreneur teams in the Threshold Impact University of Alberta Venture Mentoring Service (TIVMS). * You can read the whole list of my past volunteer roles on LinkedIn. ### Fun Facts * My husband, Dana, and I have been together since we were 18 and business partners since we were 25. * I am an unapologetic cat lady. After the loss of our two senior kitties, Toby and Penny, we adopted Winston and Stella and are enjoying (most of the time!) life with young cats. * I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Yes, it gets obscenely cold in the winter. No, I do not enjoy it. * I have done some kind of fitness (yoga, outdoor running, HIIT, strength training, pilates, air bike) every single day since January 1, 2018. * I read around 80 books a year. I mostly read fiction, with a particular soft spot for fantasy, but I often also have a nonfiction book on the go. * Dana and I play video games together. My ideal Saturday morning involves pancakes, coffee, and gaming time. Our favourites are Diablo 3, all three Dark Souls, and Elden Ring. * I am a big NBA basketball fan. My Canadian heart cheers for the Toronto Raptors, but I watch many other teams throughout the season and read a basketball newsletter over breakfast every morning. * I have travelled quite a bit and try to ensure another trip is always on the horizon. My most recent one was my 40th birthday trip to Croatia and Slovenia! * * * Check out my blog or learn more about my productivity consulting and speaking. Wanna chat?

* * * This page is inspired by Derek Sivers’s /now movement Updated on 2025-03-11. Recently I am in an (operation/maintainance) technical service contract, in which I solve all kinds of hardware/software issues. Technology involved: Networking, Linux, SQL, MySQL, TDengine, Shell/Python, TDengine, REST and Cable management ¯\_(ツ)\_/¯ 更新于 2025-03-11 。最近在执行一个(运维)技术服务合同,需要处理各种软硬件问题。涉及到的技术:计算机网络、 Linux 、 SQL 、 MySQL 、 TDengine 、 REST 交互 、命令行以及 Python 数据处理、理线 ¯\_(ツ)\_/¯ Seeking a job 找工作 ----------------- For a stable income, to cover routine bills 需要稳定收入,以应付日常开销 Learning -------- * German, mostly 泡脑子 by listening to podcast, I’m able to use some basic sentence structures, need to memorize more words. * Japanese, less progress than German, but since Japanese share some kanji with Chinese, and pronunciation of some foreign words are from English, so hopefully it will go smooth. Hurdle for learning new foreign languages is that there are few cases where I can use those languages. * SQLite, a really nice database option. An attractive idea if people consider file format as generic data, see https://www.sqlite.org/appfileformat.html

I’m a yak shaver that likes FOSS, Tolkien, TrackPoints, coffee, tweaking my dotfiles, and writing software. My name is Lukas Waymann and my usual username is Meribold. This is my website. Once in a while, I write an article for this website. So far that has happened four times: There’s also a TIL page (last update from 2024-06-25). And I’m an unprolific maker of videos: You can reach me at io@meribold.org or on Mastodon. If you want to use encryption you can download my PGP key. If you really like an article or program I wrote and want to say thanks, one way you can do so is by buying me a coffee. If you’re looking for a detail-oriented C++ or Python developer with Linux or UI design experience, you can peruse my résumé or find me on LinkedIn. Projects. Here’s some stuff I’ve worked on over the years: MouselookHandler User interface addon for World of Warcraft SnapScore SnapScore automates scoring of the Take It Easy board game using computer vision Primal UI User interface for World of Warcraft RectiPy Python package for reconstructing digital holograms Muccadoro Pomodoro timer using `figlet`, `cowsay`, and optionally `lolcat` Btry A (marginally) useful x86-64 ELF executable in 384 bytes Nutshell Dynamics C++ library for detecting and resolving collisions of rigid bodies in 3D space TrackHack Single-particle tracking program written in C++ Dotfiles Personal dotfiles make using computers tolerable I’ve also written a couple more small World of Warcraft addons, but most of these are probably defunct now. You can find some more of my work on GitHub. Last but not least, I like blogrolls, so here’s mine: noahfrederick.com Noah Frederick’s website. So far the main theme here has been Vim. www.arp242.net Martin Tournoij’s website. As far as what I’ve read goes, topics and themes include programming, empathy, FOSS, command-line tools, and society. Liberal usage of fleurons makes having ended up on a post from this blog easy to notice. blog.debiania.in.ua Alexander Batischev’s website. Themes include Linux, programming, and life lessons. usesthis.com Uses This is a website where hundreds of people have shared what tools they use to do whatever it is that they do.

I used to have a mailing list, but it was too much work to maintain, so you can still pull my RSS feed or check back to this page for the latest: I’m still waiting for most beautiful woman I’ve known to reappear with the two amazing children we share. * If she does, she’ll have to summon the courage to directly reach out to the Polk County Clerk of Court, either by calling or walking in, to have the NCO removed. * She would need to reach out to Des Moines Fellowship if she needed any support. I’m presently unemployed right now, but currently looking to pursue a mechanic role. For the first time in my life, I’m actually trusting God, which means my most significant task right now is to learn patience and peace in my ever-changing uncertainties. I’m not doing _nothing_ these days, but the to-do list gets rather small when you’re not sure what tomorrow brings. _This page is part of Derek Sivers’ /now movement. By keeping me accountable to the public, it forces me to rein in lofty, impractical ambitions and focus on what’s next._

##### Last updated on March 3, 2025 This is a public list of ideas that I would like to work on someday. This is a copy of the ideas note I have in my Obsidian vault, where I jot down interesting projects, concepts, and thoughts that I find intriguing and might want to explore in the future. Since it is not practically possible for anyone to work on every idea they have, I thought it would be better to make this note public so that someone else might build it someday. Ideas that I’m currently working on are crossed out and have been moved to my projects page. Against each idea, I’ve added a short description to provide more context. If you are interested in any of the ideas mentioned below and want to work on them or collaborate with me, feel free to contact me. In case any of the ideas already exist, please let me know, and I will cross them out with a backlink to the project. **Vape with a Puff Limiter**A vape that lets you set the maximum number of puffs you can have in a day via an app or something! Looks like another person has thought about the same .**A Search Engine for Personal Blogs**I’m unable to search for content in personal blogs on google or any other search engine. Kagi small web is there, but it’s not personal blog specific.**A World Travel Lottery**A lottery with the grand prize as a fully-expensed, world travel package to visit n countries across all continents**Cricket Guard Line Projector**If you watch cricket, you can see batsmen often marking guard lines against the stumps by asking the umpire. Why can’t we have a laser projection of the stumps controlled by the umpire with a remote?**A cheap running tracker**There are multiple running trackers that you can attach to shoes, like Stryd , but these are quite expensive. Why is it so hard to make cheaper running trackers?**A platform to read both sides of an argument.**A moderated platform where a dedicated page is present for popular topics, and people can read about both sides of the argument.**Indian News Aggregator with relevance**India is struggling with misinformation and rigged news. The magnitude is quite high, considering the huge population, the demographics, and the rising internet penetration. A platform like News Minimalist that removes clickbait titles and filters relevant news would be useful for India.**Global Fish Database in different languages**Fishnames are tricky if you travel around the world. Within a country itself, fish names would be different. A global database of fishnames in all different languages would be great!**Bookmark for Videos & Podcasts**I wish there was a tool to record a particular timestamp on a video or a podcast so that I can watch it from the saved timestamp when I resume, rather than scrolling and finding the time.**Strava for Writers**Strava is a great tool to track your activities. As a writer, such a tool would be great to see the number of words written every day and also get a sneak peek at others’ writings.**About Me Collection**I love reading the About Me sections of various personal blogs. A curated list of the best about pages would be cool.**Evergreen Hosting** People put a lot of effort into their blogs, and most often, after the person passes away, these blogs go obsolete. How about a service that you can pay for one-time or in installments, ensuring that your blog stays live forever? _Update: I wrote about in detail here . What I am doing _now_ --------------------- > “I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.” > > ― Kurt Vonnegut Perpetually… ------------ Trying to _learn generously_ (blog, teach, speak, organise, code). 2025 ---- _Updated:_ March 2025 `₹$€` Sales mode intensifies! `₹$€` _**I want to help fellow gentlenerds build writing muscles, for fun and profit.**_ * I'm currently busy whittling down a laundry list of ideas down to a _**single, narrow, specific**_ offering at set price. * I hope to launch _The Thing_ in April 2025! * Meanwhile I intend to offer a early-access free trial version. **Announcement will go out in my newsletter.** Subscribe for details (and first dibs!) on early access. 2024 ---- _Updated:_ April 2024 **Hello world, we are now open for business; helping small B2B SaaS teams _scale without diluting_.** Meanwhile, 2023's _total reinvention_ program continues. 2023 ---- _Updated:_ Aug 2023 (prev: May 2023) Starting July, I have been back at the Recurse Center for a programmer's retreat. RC is my favourite community of gentlenerds, and it's fantastic to be in NYC again, among all these awesome people. Meanwhile, the 2023 reinvention agenda continues. — _Updated:_ May 2023 (prev: April 2023) 2023 is dedicated to total reinvention. --------------------------------------- A dead past is being firewalled. Accumulated baggage is being tagged for eventual garbage collection. The mind's mechanics are being revised. The body is being repaired and upgraded. New experiences are being opted into. By learning to see with new eyes, a fresh vision of self, world, and life is appearing. > **Analogy:** Adopt "diffuse mode" mindset to reinvent, and "focus mode" mindset to then re-build. 2023 is professional reinvention number three. ---------------------------------------------- My 20s were full of MBA-type work as well as one failed attempt at a startup. My 30s became about software engineering. The 40s seem to have begun with yet another pivot; toward solo enterprise. Suit and hoodie are amalgamating. > **Objective:** Test one's wits, skills, capabilities, knowledge in the exacting crucible of makin' and sellin' stuff. 2023 is sabbatical number four. ------------------------------- My sabbaticals have been times of hardcore reading, study, and hands-on use of new knowledge. Literally living _eval/apply_; I learn things and test myself by landing paid gigs for what I have learned. Let's see where this one goes. > **Insight:** Making sabbaticals work is primarily about psychology, not money. Yes, and… --------- An improv-style approach is being applied to break into the present, and to also break out of the "no, but" style psychological ossification that is common experience, after having lived a bit (but not a bit too much). Living a bit too much seems to engender a "like, whatever" style of psychological regression. That feels _so_ much harder to escape. Anyway, we're escaping "no, but" out here, and if you call this method improv-ing oneself, we won't complain. > **Experience:** I am about a year into what I've dubbed the "_Yes, and_ method of reinvention". And yes, I heartily recommend it to anyone who will listen. Small is beautiful; the lifelong trend continues. ------------------------------------------------- Career-start was the first time I truly exerted my volitional muscles, and chose to work with/at small and medium companies instead of the socially approved giant MNC circuit. That drive has run through my MBA twenties, tech thirties, and seems to be the _telos_ for the, shall we say, _company of one_ forties? > **Principle:** When reinventing, known-good legacy need not be discarded. It may in fact be the very thing to subtract down to, and rebuild from, anew. 2021 and 2022 ------------- > "A rebirth requires a death." > > — Yours truly 'nuff said. 2020 ---- _This_ would be _The Year Of Total Reinvention_, had Certain World Events not intervened. Still, it began swimmingly, hacking Clojure code at a consulting gig, organising IN/Clojure 2020, and experiencing an amazing programmer's retreat at the Recurse Center. Pre-2020 -------- Faded into the mists of time. GOTO now.
