A platform like News Minimalist that removes clickbait titles and filters relevant news would be useful for India.**Global Fish Database in different languages**Fishnames are tricky if you travel around the world. Within a country itself, fish names would be different. A global database of fishnames in all different languages would be great!**Bookmark for Videos & Podcasts**I wish there was a tool to record a particular timestamp on a video or a podcast so that I can watch it from the saved timestamp when I resume, rather than scrolling and finding the time.**Strava for Writers**Strava is a great tool to track your activities. As a writer, such a tool would be great to see the number of words written every day and also get a sneak peek at others’ writings.**About Me Collection**I love reading the About Me sections of various personal blogs. A curated list of the best about pages would be cool.**Evergreen Hosting** People put a lot of effort into their blogs, and most often, after the person passes away, these blogs go obsolete. By learning to see with new eyes, a fresh vision of self, world, and life is appearing. > **Analogy:** Adopt "diffuse mode" mindset to reinvent, and "focus mode" mindset to then re-build. 2023 is professional reinvention number three. ---------------------------------------------- My 20s were full of MBA-type work as well as one failed attempt at a startup. My 30s became about software engineering. The 40s seem to have begun with yet another pivot; toward solo enterprise. Suit and hoodie are amalgamating. > **Objective:** Test one's wits, skills, capabilities, knowledge in the exacting crucible of makin' and sellin' stuff. 2023 is sabbatical number four. ------------------------------- My sabbaticals have been times of hardcore reading, study, and hands-on use of new knowledge. Literally living _eval/apply_; I learn things and test myself by landing paid gigs for what I have learned. Let's see where this one goes. > **Insight:** Making sabbaticals work is primarily about psychology, not money. Yes, and… --------- An improv-style approach is being applied to break into the present, and to also break out of the "no, but" style psychological ossification that is common experience, after having lived a bit (but not a bit too much). Living a bit too much seems to engender a "like, whatever" style of psychological regression. That feels _so_ much harder to escape. Anyway, we're escaping "no, but" out here, and if you call this method improv-ing oneself, we won't complain. > **Experience:** I am about a year into what I've dubbed the "_Yes, and_ method of reinvention". And yes, I heartily recommend it to anyone who will listen. Small is beautiful; the lifelong trend continues. ------------------------------------------------- Career-start was the first time I truly exerted my volitional muscles, and chose to work with/at small and medium companies instead of the socially approved giant MNC circuit. That drive has run through my MBA twenties, tech thirties, and seems to be the _telos_ for the, shall we say, _company of one_ forties? > **Principle:** When reinventing, known-good legacy need not be discarded. It may in fact be the very thing to subtract down to, and rebuild from, anew. 2021 and 2022 ------------- > "A rebirth requires a death." > > — Yours truly 'nuff said. 2020 ---- _This_ would be _The Year Of Total Reinvention_, had Certain World Events not intervened. This is a /now page. The following is true as of March 2025. I moved to Toronto from Vancouver in November of 2015, and started working for Acquia as a support engineer, and as of November 2019, a senior support engineer, and as of July 2021, a lead support engineer. (No, not the metal.) I work with the U.S. east coast team, which is located in Boston, MA, collaborating with them from downtown Toronto. I've been working at home since March 2020 thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. During the warmer months…well, I used to have an office to commute to by bike, but now I still bike around often enough. After two years of trying to stay active but not participating in any running races, I was back in the saddle in 2022. 2023 had been a slow year for running races. I didn't run a race in 2024, and started hiking (year-round) instead. Social media I keep updated: * You should follow me on Mastodon, and maybe Bluesky, but no longer the defunct social media site Twitter to find my various witty remarks. * Goodreads tells you what books I’m reading. * Letterboxd lists the movies I just watched. * Trakt.tv keeps a record of the TV shows I watch. * Untappd keeps track of the beers I drink. * Flickr hosts the occasional snapshots I think are worth posting * Last.fm logs the music I listen to. I spend my free time doing things that the GPS in my iPhone enables, like playing Ingress and visiting microconfluences. I play as many location-based games as I can. The current regulars are: * Foursquare's Swarm * Olixsoft's Fog of World * Strava (that's a game, right?) * Niantic's Ingress (I'm formerly a heavy user, now a light user) My latest programming project was a self-hosted tool that turns your a Slack channel into a Twitter client. I would constantly look for ways to smash together public APIs, especially if there was a geographic component, but work and keeping on top of chores and errands means there's not a lot of time for coding. As of September 2017, I have been a director for the Icelandic Canadian Club of Toronto, and since October of 2018 I've served as the secretary. I help out with the Instagram account, the ICCT Twitter account and the Facebook page, and provide what insight I can to the board. I also help out with Nordic Nights, a monthly movie night during the colder months. From November 2019 to 2024, I was a board member of the Garment District Neighbourhood Association. I still maintain the online properties (Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, as well as manage our back-end tools). From October 2022 to November 2024, I was the secretary of the GDNA. I've been coping relatively well with the pandemic. I have a page of posts related to just that on my blog, sorted in forward-chronological order.
