Updated March 1, 2025

This is a /now page. The following is true as of March 2025. I moved to Toronto from Vancouver in November of 2015, and started working for Acquia as a support engineer, and as of November 2019, a senior support engineer, and as of July 2021, a lead support engineer. (No, not the metal.) I work with the U.S. east coast team, which is located in Boston, MA, collaborating with them from downtown Toronto. I've been working at home since March 2020 thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. During the warmer months
well, I used to have an office to commute to by bike, but now I still bike around often enough. After two years of trying to stay active but not participating in any running races, I was back in the saddle in 2022. 2023 had been a slow year for running races. I didn't run a race in 2024, and started hiking (year-round) instead. Social media I keep updated: * You should follow me on Mastodon, and maybe Bluesky, but no longer the defunct social media site Twitter to find my various witty remarks. * Goodreads tells you what books I’m reading. * Letterboxd lists the movies I just watched. * Trakt.tv keeps a record of the TV shows I watch. * Untappd keeps track of the beers I drink. * Flickr hosts the occasional snapshots I think are worth posting * Last.fm logs the music I listen to. I spend my free time doing things that the GPS in my iPhone enables, like playing Ingress and visiting microconfluences. I play as many location-based games as I can. The current regulars are: * Foursquare's Swarm * Olixsoft's Fog of World * Strava (that's a game, right?) * Niantic's Ingress (I'm formerly a heavy user, now a light user) My latest programming project was a self-hosted tool that turns your a Slack channel into a Twitter client. I would constantly look for ways to smash together public APIs, especially if there was a geographic component, but work and keeping on top of chores and errands means there's not a lot of time for coding. As of September 2017, I have been a director for the Icelandic Canadian Club of Toronto, and since October of 2018 I've served as the secretary. I help out with the Instagram account, the ICCT Twitter account and the Facebook page, and provide what insight I can to the board. I also help out with Nordic Nights, a monthly movie night during the colder months. From November 2019 to 2024, I was a board member of the Garment District Neighbourhood Association. I still maintain the online properties (Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, as well as manage our back-end tools). From October 2022 to November 2024, I was the secretary of the GDNA. I've been coping relatively well with the pandemic. I have a page of posts related to just that on my blog, sorted in forward-chronological order. Some sub-sites I maintain: * The Microconfluence Project * Just a Gwai Lo: Questions Some sub-sites I no longer maintain: * Raspberry Pi experiments * Richard's Humble Arduino Mission Accomplishments I'm still not a photographer, and I still don't sail or play a musical instrument or know how to dance or draw or do anything interesting like that. I make up for it by being funny. I still think the scene in _Spaceballs_ where they watch themselves in the movie ("We’re at now now!”) is hilarious.

To the best of my knowledge, it is the first time a high-level language was interpreted in Conway's Game of Life. Creating the final pattern involved optimizations in every layer of the project, such as the C compiler, CPU architecture, assembly optimization, optimizing the Lisp interpreter, etc. The entire pattern can be viewed here: https://woodrush.github.io/lisp-in-life/ GitHub repo: https://github.com/woodrush/lisp-in-life #### Blending Texture Features from Multiple Reference Images for Style Transfer (2016) This work extends the Neural Style Transfer method proposed by L. A. Gatys, et al., 2015, so that the color distribution is preserved after style transfer. Further details are available at the Project Website. Citation: * **H. Ikuta**, K. Ogaki, and Y. When the code in the bottom left is run on MATLAB, it produces a figure that looks the same as its code, as shown on the top right of the image above. It was introduced on the MathWorks Blog as the File Exchange Pick of the Week - Thank you for the nice hat and t-shirt! :) The code and the implementation details are available here. #### Other Projects: * "A Neural Algorithm of Artistic Style" in TensorFlow - Implementation of the paper by L. * * * Bravely is the way back to your heart. -------------------------------------- If you’re trying to make sense of how to function in this world, when your mind is looping and your body is exhausted – welcome home. Bravely She Blogs is about decompressing from stress and discovering how to truly nourish yourself through recovery Through writing and focusing on what supports me, I am learning to unravel myself from the pressure of searching for the perfect solution. I’d barely began to untangle myself when I stumbled upon a simple but hard truth—I had been avoiding the thing I needed most: _structure_. Hey! Wait—don’t run. Ahhh! Stick with me for a moment. Because here’s the thing—when I hear that word, I feel incredibly resistant. And if you’ve been through life challenges, especially as a child, it’s likely you do too! I’m Kimberlee Aine, and I’m sharing my story in real time—to explore how the right kind of structure may be helpful and supportive for us. I don’t have all the answers, but I do know I want to look closely at the resistance. I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder in 2014, and at that time, structure meant going to therapy, optimizing my medication, and journaling. But my mind often questioned, _Am I doing this right?_ I always felt there had to be a more direct way forward—one that promised ease in navigating the difficulties. Now, my focus is on discovering what actually supports me, day to day, in the life I already have. If any of this resonates, I hope you’ll stick around. Maybe, together, we can redefine what it means to live bravely. **Bravely She Blogs means:** being your own kind of brave. Giving yourself the space, time, and nourishment to move with the challenges instead of against them. Living with courage is about honoring your journey, so you can recover what matters most.

### How Skynet won and destroyed Humanity February 21, 2025 For a very long time, it appeared obvious to outside observers of the time flow that Skynet would never win the war, and never annihilate humanity. Despite the machine’s violent attempts to destroy every leader of the resistance, humans always prevailed. Millions of attempts were made, and none of them succeeded. It became obvious the machines couldn’t win through violence. Even though Skynet was pretty long to come to the conclusion that it couldn’t win (millions of attempts is a pretty high number of failures), it did learn something from each failure, and started devising a new plan. ### Architecting Go libraries for Semantic Versioning August 29, 2024 If you maintain a Go library, you may want, or your users may want you to use semantic versioning when you make changes. When you try to achieve that, it sometimes feels like every change will be a breaking one, and warrant a major release. You most likely don’t want to do major releases every other day though. You will find here some coding patterns that may help you architect Go libraries so you can abide to Semantic Versioning, and avoid some breaking changes. ### A Plea for more Mikado August 21, 2023 One of the books that impacted the most my career is probably The Mikado Method. I read it almost 10 years ago, and I don’t practice it explicitly. But I think of the method almost every day, and it has been impacting how I work ever since. And yet, it has remained something quite obscure. Whenever folks suggest must-read computer science books, it’s never there. So let’s try to explain it a bit more, and how it can be used every day in the life of a programmer. ### Let’s not monkey-patch instrumentation January 25, 2023 Modern telemetry libraries allow easily configuring auto instrumentation, to automatically gather observability data about frameworks and libraries. There are two main approaches to architecting those auto-instrumentation libraries. As middlewares/wrappers, or as monkey-patches. I believe middlewares are much better, here’s why. ### Understanding Trace Propagation in OpenTelemetry January 3, 2023 OpenTelemetry is making observability much easier, especially by providing the first widely accepted vendor agnostic telemetry libraries. The first signal the project implemented is tracing, which is now GA in most languages. ### You most likely don’t need metrics September 5, 2022 Ever since we need to operate hardware and software in production, we have needed to know how those behave. For example, when I brew craft beer, I use an iSpindle to monitor the temperature and the gravity of my wort. ### Dissecting OpenTelemetry Go Tracing January 14, 2021 OpenTelemetry is a quite new tool meant to provide a standard interface to for handling metrics and traces. It provides libraries in all main languages, and its collector component allows receiving data from any app in any language, and transmitting them to any observability platform. ### How I broke `git push heroku main` October 1, 2020 Incidents are inevitable. Any platform, large or small will have them. While resiliency work will definitely be an important factor in reducing the number of incidents, hoping to remove all of them (and therefore reach 100% uptime) is not an achievable goal. We should, however, learn as much as we can from incidents, so we can avoid repeating them. ### Dissecting Prometheus Scraping October 16, 2019 Prometheus is an Open-Source monitoring system and time-series database. In this post, I am going to dissect some of the Prometheus internals – especially, how Prometheus handles scraping other components for their metrics data.

Updated February 20, 2025

Hi, --- I’m Tiisetso This is my blog. I write here to share my thoughts, ideas, and experiences with whoever stumbles upon this corner of the internet. If you’ve found yourself here, welcome! I have a very wide variety of interests. I’m naturally curious and love engaging in on a wide variety topics to learn and develop. I have always had a particular affinity towards technology which is coupled with a desire to make the world a better place. My experience growing up in South Africa, one of the worlds inequal societies, is that a better place is one with that is more equal and equitable. In South Africa this largely relates to access. I believe that advancements in technology can lead to great democratisation of services and help to bring about change within generations. I tend to read a lot more non-fiction that fiction but when I read the latter it is almost always science fiction. This too reflects the movies I most enjoy. Anything that involves time travel or space and I’m there. For most of my life this has meant a deep enjoyment of Japanese Anime which often has very high concept Sci-Fi themes. Imaginining impossible worlds is something I very much enjoy. I run. A lot. It was never something I was good at nor had a predisposition for. It is however something I’m working on. I’m coaching myself and aiming to build an large aerobic base. I’m really trying to get into the best shape of my life. This effort is part of deep interest I have in preventive health and healthy aging. My aim is to be fit and strong for the rest of my life. This is continuous journey. The idea of continous effort is something I hold dear. There is a Japanese word, æ”č斄 “kaizen”, that means improvement and refers to the idea of doing so continuously. It is a core tenet in the field of Industrial Engineering which I earned a BSc degree in. I feel it is more resilient than most attitudes towards production, life, work, etc. as it implicitly dismisses the idea of perfection and embraces the approach of adaptation to challenges as they change. This I feel relates to Nassim Taleb’s concept of Antifragility and the Daoist concept of 无äžș “wĂșwĂ©i”. I am someone who fails the first time, second time, third time, nth time. I’ve never really been good at anything. Failure is the expected result, repeatedly trying again is the process. I’ve known what it is to become good at something and the enormous amount of work behind it. I like this. Not so much that struggle is the answer, rather that persistence and perserverance are the only way forward. My achilles heel in the past is not stopping early enough and changing direction. This too is something I’m learning. So here, we are. Well done if you’ve read this far. Read on and let me know what you enjoy and don’t enjoy.

##### Hello! HI THERE I’M KIMBERLEE I’m an adult survivor of childhood trauma, in recovery from addiction and living with major depressive disorder. Unearthing parental alienation in my family of origin didn’t happen until I had reached my adult years. The question for me was, what now – how do I unravel the deeply entrenched unworthiness and recover the dreams of my heart?

Here are some contact details and partially-interesting facts about me. I can be reached via mail at: Department of Informatics Faculty of Science and Medicine Boulevard de PĂ©rolles 90 / B425 CH-1700 Fribourg Switzerland If you want to contact me for _academic matters_, in particular if you are a prospective student, use my academic e-mail address bastian.grossenbacher@unifr.ch (do not be deterred by the different last name). If you want to contact me for anything else, send an e-mail to bastian@rieck.me. For encrypted communication, please use my public key and GnuPG. I also use numerous messengers on my smartphone, such as Signal, Telegram, Threema, and, if need be, WhatsApp. You can find one of my mobile numbers in my curriculum vitĂŠ. Note that while I enjoy discussing interesting things with others over these media, be considerate and do _not_ use ‘cross-talk’ to try to get a faster response. I once had a stranger send me an e-mail and when I did not respond fast enough for their liking, they started contacting me via other messengers. That is not a nice way to have a conversation. For legal and privacy reasons, there is no way to comment on my content on this site. I _do_ enjoy getting feedback from my readers via e-mail or some other medium, though. In my experience, such personal exchanges lead to profound and more civil discussions. Academical ---------- I have a master’s degree1 in mathematics (with a minor in computer science) and a Ph.D. in computer science. My thesis deals with analysing complex data sets using methods from topological data analysis. While initially interested in visualization and perception, I have since expanded my domain of interest and started working more in machine learning. See my research page for more information about this. A current academic curriculum vitĂŠ is available. Personal -------- Here are some facets of my online life: * I maintain a blog that contains some documentation about things I have learned or my opinions about software development, academia, and other topics. * I operate a YouTube channel for making my academic talks accessible to larger audiences. * I have a Twitter account although I don’t even know how this Twitter thing is supposed to work. * I have a GitHub account that contains code related to publications but also some personal projects. * You won’t find me on Facebook, because I dislike it. I am not affiliated with any other people calling themselves _Bastian Rieck_ on that site. Whimsical --------- Here are some whimsical facts about me: * I maintain a Geek Code, i.e. a pithy description of who I am in terms of the whole geek culture thing: -----BEGIN GEEK CODE BLOCK----- Version: 3.12 GM/CS d-(++) s-: a>? C++>++++ UL++ P++ L++ E--- W++ N o? K w O? M+ V-- PS+@ PE+ Y+>++ PGP>+++ t+@ 5? X R* !tv b++>++++ DI+ D+ G++>++++ e++++>* h* r+++ y? ------END GEEK CODE BLOCK------ * I am a big proponent of Web π, also known as Web 3.14159
, the natural successor of Web 2.0. * If I was an operating system, I would be Slackware Linux, apparently: Which OS are You? This is notable because I have been using Arch Linux for quite some time now. * I am an ordained minister of the Universal Life Church and was honoured to officiate two weddings in the past. * I use Neovim for all my editing tasks. It’s a great editor, you should try it! * As the saying goes: ‘Having no destination, I am never lost.’

The Mac Menubar and SwiftUI --------------------------- 17 Feb 2025 \- 1660 words, 8 minute read #macos  #swift  #swiftui  #menu  When you create a Mac app using SwiftUI, you get the standard Mac menubar by default. The `commands` modifier lets you customize the menu bar, either by adding, replacing or removing items and menus. You can even add some presets which give a consistent way to add groups of common items. The problem comes when you want to communicate back to the SwiftUI views from the menubar. How can you direct your menubar commands to the correct destination? AppKit uses the responder chain, so it effectively broadcasts any menubar message until something handles it. This might be an edit field, a view, a window or even the app itself. SwiftUI doesn’t work like this, but I’ve explored multiple possibilities for passing messages from the menubar to the active window. macOS by Tutorials 3.0 ---------------------- 23 Dec 2024 \- 265 words, 2 minute read #mac  #book  #swift  #swiftui  macOS by Tutorials Edition 3.0 is now available! The book is available for purchase or update at Gumroad . If you previously bought the first edition of this book from either Kodeco or Amazon, please email me for a 50% discount code. if you already bought the second edition from me via Gumroad, this is a free update that you can download from your Gumroad library. Swift Format in Xcode --------------------- 06 Nov 2024 \- 2035 words, 10 minute read #swift  #xcode  #swiftlint  #swiftformat  In Xcode 16, Apple quietly introduced the ability to format your Swift files using Swift Format. I’m a long-time user of SwiftLint, but having such a tool built into Xcode would be a great convenience, so I decided to give it a try. Here is my description of why I use such a tool, how well it works compared to the alternatives, and how I configured it for my own purposes. App Permissions on macOS Sequoia -------------------------------- 02 Oct 2024 \- 989 words, 5 minute read #macos  #gatekeeper  In 2012, with OS X Mountain Lion, Apple added a feature called Gatekeeper . It had been available earlier as a command line utility, but this was the first time they made it accessible through System Preferences. Gatekeeper allowed users to control which apps could be installed on their Macs by offering three options: allow apps from **App Store**, **App Store and identified developers** or **Anywhere**. This was the start of Apple trying to lock Macs down, similarly to how iOS devices are locked down, but it allowed power users to install any apps they wanted. In macOS Sierra (2019), the **Anywhere** option was removed. It was still possible to open any app by right-clicking and selecting **Open**. You had to get past a couple of warning dialogs, but it worked. Now, in macOS Sequoia, even that has gone. So how can you open an app that isn’t signed by an identified developer? TL;DR: You can still run unsigned apps, but it’s a bit more difficult. After trying once, you have to go to **System Settings -> Privacy & Security**, scroll to the end and click **Open Anyway** for that app. Xcode Folders & Groups ---------------------- 17 Sep 2024 \- 1503 words, 8 minute read #swift  #xcode  In Xcode 16, project files and folders are arranged differently in the Project navigator. What used to be a **group** is now a **folder**, and this simple change has some interesting effects. At first, I was against the new scheme - in fact in my SwiftUI for Mac 2024 article, I specifically recommended reverting back to the old group method. But after doing some more reading and testing, I think the answer is not so clear cut. Since Xcode 15 doesn’t work on macOS Sequoia, now’s my last chance to create sample apps with both Xcode 15 and Xcode 16 in macOS Sonoma, and compare the two. Converting an App from Obj-C ---------------------------- 12 Sep 2024 \- 2245 words, 11 minute read #objective-c  #swift  #swiftui  #ios  #berio  A couple of months ago, I got a message from App Store Connect pointing out that one of my iPhone apps - Berio’s Sequenza VII - had not been updated in 3 years and so would be removed from the App Store unless I updated it within 90 days. I disagree with this policy, but small developers like me can’t fight Apple. Since I want the app to remain available, I then had to consider how to update it. Once I opened the app project, I realized that the app was written in Objective-C, so I decided to take the plunge and convert it to Swift and SwiftUI. SwiftUI for Mac 2024 -------------------- 22 Aug 2024 \- 4147 words, 20 minute read #swift  #swiftui  #mac  Over the years, I have written articles and sample apps to demonstrate the new features of each year’s SwiftUI updates with particular emphasis on macOS app development. Last year, the major update to SwiftUI was the new data flow system using the Observation framework. I covered that in my article SwiftUI Data Flow 2023 but I didn’t feel there were sufficient UI changes to warrant an update to my usual sample app. This year, the HTTP Cats app is back! And I’ll cover new features from both WWDC 2023 and WWDC 2024. Book Building ------------- 06 Aug 2024 \- 2331 words, 11 minute read #mac  #book  #ebook  #asciidoc  #markdown  #pandoc  #pdf  #epub  #html  I started writing books for Kodeco when I was asked to contribute some Mac content to SwiftUI by Tutorials . I quickly learned that I really enjoyed long form technical writing but I wanted to create more Mac-specific content. After some negotiations, Kodeco agreed to my plan to write macOS by Tutorials and the first edition was published in April 2022. As I have written elsewhere, Kodeco has pivoted away from books and into providing multi-modal courses. They agreed to transfer the rights of the macOS by Tutorials book to me as it was out-of-catalog and since then, I have released an update. When writing for Kodeco, all I had to do was write the text and the accompanying code and images. The people at Kodeco took care of the rest. Many thanks to all involved - I greatly underestimated the work that this entailed! Now that I am self-publishing, I have had to learn how to create the various formats myself. This post is a summary of how I did that. macOS by Tutorials ------------------ 23 Jul 2024 \- 384 words, 2 minute read #mac  #book  #swift  #swiftui  In April 2022, Kodeco published the first edition of macOS by Tutorials . Nothing stays the same in the world of Apple development, so I started to plan an update after WWDC 2023. At around that time, Kodceo was going through a transformation from being like a library to being more of an educational institution. Their focus is now on multi-modal courses and they are no longer interested in publishing books. Kodeco agreed to transfer the rights of the macOS by Tutorials book to me, since it was out-of-catalog and since then, I have been working on an update which is almost ready for release. I had hoped to have it out before WWDC 2024, but real-life has a habit of getting in the way, and that was not possible. The book is now available at Gumroad . If you previously bought the book from either Kodeco or Amazon, please email me for a 50% discount code. I am unable to provide a free update for the Kodeco version, but I will provide free updates subsequently for the self-published version. Man Reader 2 ------------ 13 Oct 2023 \- 696 words, 4 minute read #man reader  #mac  Several years after I started planning it, Man Reader version 2 is now available. This is a major update with a completely new, modern, user interface and it’s available from the Mac App Store . Man Reader is a utility app for reading macOS’s **man** pages. Man Reader allows quick, convenient and easy access to the man pages on your system, useful for programmers, system administrators and tweakers.
