Summary ------- TextAnalysisTool.NET is a free program designed to excel at viewing, searching, and navigating large files quickly and efficiently. TextAnalysisTool.NET provides a view of the data that you can easily manipulate (through the use of various filters) to display exactly the information you need - as you need it! Download -------- **TextAnalysisTool.NET.zip** ### Includes: * Version `2025-06-17` for .NET 4.8+ (32- and 64-bit) * Version `2020-12-17` for .NET 4+ (32- and 64-bit) * Version `2013-05-07` for .NET 2+ (32- and 64-bit) * Version `2006-12-04` for .NET 1.1+ (32-bit only) * Version `2001-12-28` for x86 (32-bit only) ### License: MIT Overview -------- The Problem: For those times when you have to analyze a large amount of textual data, picking out the relevant line(s) of interest can be quite difficult. Standard text editors usually provide a generic "find" function, but the limitations of that simple approach quickly become apparent (e.g., when it is necessary to compare two or more widely separated lines). Some more sophisticated editors do better by allowing you to "bookmark" lines of interest; this can be a big help, but is often not enough. The Solution: TextAnalysisTool.NET - a program designed from the start to excel at viewing, searching, and navigating large files quickly and efficiently. TextAnalysisTool.NET provides a view of the file that you can easily manipulate (through the use of various filters) to display exactly the information you need - as you need it. Filters: Before displaying the lines of a file, TextAnalysisTool.NET passes the lines of that file through a set of user-defined filters, dimming or hiding all lines that do not satisfy any of the filters. Filters can select only the lines that contain a sub-string, those that have been marked with a particular marker type, or those that match a regular expression. Text and background colors can be associated with each filter so that lines matching a particular filter stand out and lines matching different filters can be easily distinguished. In addition to the normal "including" filters that isolate lines of text you DO want to see, there are also "excluding" filters that can be used to suppress lines you do NOT want to see. Excluding filters are configured just like including filters but are processed afterward and remove all matching lines from the set. Excluding filters allow you to easily refine your search even further. Markers: Markers are another way that TextAnalysisTool.NET makes it easy to navigate a file; you can mark any line with one or more of eight different marker types. Once lines have been marked, you can quickly navigate between similarly marked lines - or add a "marked by" filter to view only those lines. Find: TextAnalysisTool.NET also provides a flexible "find" function that allows you to search for text anywhere within a file. This text can be a literal string or a regular expression, so it's easy to find a specific line. If you decide to turn a find string into a filter, the history feature of both dialogs makes it easy. Summary: TextAnalysisTool.NET was written with speed and ease of use in mind throughout. It saves you time by allowing you to save and load filter sets; it lets you import text by opening a file, dragging-and-dropping a file or text from another application, or by pasting text from the clipboard; and it allows you to share the results of your filters by copying lines to the clipboard or by saving the current lines to a file. TextAnalysisTool.NET supports files encoded with ANSI, UTF-8, Unicode, and big-endian Unicode and is designed to handle large files efficiently. About ----- Last updated: June 15, 2025 at 05:29 PM PDT (GMT-7) Hello, internet. My name is Sean (pronounced to ryhme with John). I write software. I live in Vancouver, Canada. I'm a Zillenial (geriatric Gen-Z?). I've lived on the west coast of Canada my whole life, primarily on Vancouver Island. I attended the University of Victoria, where I studied Mechanical Software Engineering, with a somewhat discordant focus on both embedded systems and on artificial intelligence. I graduated with a Bachelor’s of Software Engineering. I've always been interested in how software can be integrated into the "real world". The underlying interest which lead be towards a career in engineering is space. I recall as a child watching this scene (and the movie broadly) being a formative experience in my figuring out what I wanted to do in life. I was involved in undergraduate rocketry and satellite design teams in university. This culminated in the opportunity to work with some very talented people designing the RF communication subsystem for ORCASat - which spent 195 days in low Earth orbit. Professionally, I write embedded C++ for motion-automation applications. In my spare time I'm working on a game engine. I like to tinker and build. When I have more space I'd love to get into something more hands-on, but for now, I mostly write code. I'm too young to remember the early internet, but I've heard good things. This website is self-hosted and largely handmade (can you tell?). To contribute to the kind of internet I'd like to see more of, I maintain this website. It is principally a blog, but it also contains notes, projects descriptions, and links to things which I find useful or interesting. You can find much of this under Miscellanea. If you are interested in exploring the margins of the internet, Marginalia Search is a search engine which is designed with the goal of improving the discoverability of blogs and other parts of the independent web. I like to read. I like to run. Hiking is negotiable. I'm trying my hand at some artwork (inspired by a game project I'm working on). And, most recently I like to write on the internet. I share my name with many others on the internet. Unfortunately, some of them are way cooler. I mean, a race car driver and an actor?—Tough break. There are only few Google search results that I am associated with, and they are likely all linked to from this site. Colophon -------- The first incarnation of this site went live at seanmcauliffe.ca in early 2024. I entirely remade the site in early 2025. You might be visiting it at either smca.dev (canonical) or seanmcauliffe.ca. Designed and developed by me, with inspiration taken from many places on the indie-web. Built with 11ty and hosted on a Digital Ocean VPS. The primary typeface used is Recursive The header typeface is Signika Negative All fonts and other static assets are delivered from my server, not from third parties. Code-block syntax highlighting uses the _GitHub Dark Dimmed_ theme. SVG icons are sourced from iconnmonstr. This site is statically generated. The build processes uses the following dependencies: * markdown-it-attrs * markdown-it-footnote * katex * highlight.js

Here’s three seasons of updates in one package. * AutereDB project * FemtoQueue project * Japan trip * FreeBSD home server * Home * Books * Games * Anime AutereDB project ---------------- I was reading Designing Data-intensive Applications and I came across a chapter where the author goes over log-structured database architecture. I knew about B-tree based systems, but this seemingly simpler approach was new to me. I was intrigued, but I also felt like I didn’t fully grok how every cog in the theoretical database machine worked together. Therefore, I decided to write a quick MVP thing in Rust during a conference flight. The result is **AutereDB** (Github). AutereDB is more like a database engine. It doesn’t have a query language, authorization mechanisms, multi-table support or other higher-level features. It simply makes sure that records are written to disk as expected, and queries return the correct data. You can read more about the project in the `README.md`. I have no plans to really further this project. I feel it was a one-off to better grok how these things work. I consider this goal met; I am now more confident about reasoning about data systems. Many things that I learned the hard way during this project have already proved to be beneficial in my day job, so mission success. Help yourself to the `ARCHITECTURE.md` file in the repository, and have a laugh at how I made multiple major miscalculations early on in the project, and then scrambled to fix these as I realized my folly. I tried to document most of these in the architecture decision log, for posterity. FemtoQueue project ------------------ Another data-centric project I conjured up: a Python task queue library that uses files in the filesystem for task persistence, and `rename()` to atomically move tasks from one state to another. FemtoQueue is on Github, as well as on PyPI as a pip-installable package. I’m pretty proud of this one. The core idea fits in under 100 lines of no-dependency Python. The current version with QoL stuff and docstrings clocks in at around 350 LoC. I could see it being very useful for small projects where you need some kind of a durable queue for sending emails etc., but don’t want to add a whole separate networked Redis-like thing, or Celery or a home-cooked SQLite-based solution. Japan trip ---------- Me and my fiancĆ©e made a long-awaited trip to Japan in the spring. We landed in the KIX airport near Ōsaka right in the middle of the cherry blossom season, hanami. We traveled the central island, HonshÅ«, for three weeks. Mostly by train, but also by bus. We visited Ōsaka, Nara, Kyōto, Gifu-Takayama, Kanazawa and finally Tōkyō. This route skips the popular south-coast bullet train connection, instead going north through the mountains. I got to finally test my Japanese. Speaking was very laborious at first, but it got way easier the more I got to practise. My vocabulary didn’t improve that much, but what improved were things like _cadence_, _aizuchi_, and ability to respond with more natural word choices. Big up to active listening and copying native speakers. We ate and drank well. We mostly gravitated towards traditional-style, or _washoku_, establishments. Our favorite meals were prepared by a sweet grandma in a hot springs guesthouse in the mountains. Simple and clean ingredients. Something to note: pickled veggies go great with meat-centered, hearty meals. We were eager to implement this in our home cooking as soon as we got home. We visited the obligatory tourist spots, like the _Thousand torÄ« gates_ in Kyōto, and the _Dōtonbori shopping street_ in Ōsaka. We like seeing sights, but we know that our most memorable experiences have always come naturally from exploration and keeping an open mind. That’s why we spent only a fraction of our time visiting Tripadvisor locations and most of the time wandering around, following local recommendations and keeping our eyes, ears and nostrils peeled. We are planning to travel there again, maybe on honeymoon. FreeBSD home server ------------------- I have recently started a project of setting up a small publicly accessible home server that will replace my DigitalOcean VPS in some time. The system will be very FreeBSD jail focused. I have just received the hardware and verified that the everything is up to par. Very hyped about this one. I am planning to write some posts about the progress. Home ---- A lot of small things need renovated. I guess this is what owning a house is. We have done a lot, and even more is still on the backlog. ć—ć‚‡ć†ćŒćŖ恄恭怂 Going to install some patio roofing during the next couple of weeks, first time doing that. Books ----- Mostly FreeBSD stuff by Michael W. Lucas. **Finished** * Designing Data-intensive Applications (took a long time to work through this one) * FreeBSD Mastery: Storage Essentials **Started** * Absolute FreeBSD * FreeBSD Mastery: ZFS * FreeBSD Mastery: Jails Games ----- **Played** * Gato Roboto * A Short Hike * Cozy Grove (watched my fiancĆ©e play this one) * Warhammer 40k: Boltgun **Enjoyed as a VOD/live stream** * Blue Prince * Rainworld Anime ----- * Jujutsu Kaisen 0, S1, S2 * FLCL Progressive * Demon Slayer: Mugen Train * Evangelion rebuild movies * Blame! (movie) * Puella Magi Madoka Magica * Dandadan * Chainsaw Man (still a couple of eps to go) Previous update --------------- * šŸ Now, fall 2024

(This is a now page.) Personal -------- After 13 years living in and around Half Moon Bay, CA, we moved to Temecula, CA in 2023. Elisabeth’s family lives in the area, and we had a very limited support network there. Plus it’s easy for me to work remote, and escaping the Bay Area cost of living was nice. The local politics are kinda awful, but the schools are highly rated, and we found a church we really like. We bought a house we like in a really great neighborhood, and have been keeping ourselves busy with remodel projects and trying not to kill the 150 rose bushes or dozen fruit trees on the property. I’m currently reading _Antimemetics: Why Some Ideas Resist Spreading_ by Nadia Asparouhova. Professional ------------ I’ve been working as a software engineer at Tailscale since May 2022. I’ve worked on a bunch of different things, but am currently focused on identity-related projects.

**A new era in environmental insight begins here.**Ā  The Green Building Law Update blog authored by attorney Stuart Kaplow provides strategic intelligence on environmental law under the overarching concept of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource efficient; published for a target audience that is the entire business community, .. not just lawyers. Blog posts aim to be relevant, novel, and urgent, written with utility. ā€œ_This will help your business._ā€ Launched in 2008 by Chris Cheatham, the blog served as a forum to discuss green building laws. Today, published by Stuart Kaplow, the blog has expanded to provide insights into the broader environmental industrial complex. The blog remains popular because posts are positive, often fun, and always forward thinking briefs on the cutting edge, at times bleeding edge, issues of the day, like the widely read post some months ago about monetizing greenhouse gas emission data. The blog has at its foundation an ethos bent on environmental change for those who are the fastest adapters and quickest disrupters of existing environmental public policy by prioritizing innovation and advancing emergent market based success. Blog posts track Stuart Kaplow’s business philosophy of ā€œ_environmental risk as an opportunity._ā€ **Who is Stuart Kaplow?** Kaplow at Everest Base Camp Stuart Kaplow is an environmental attorney and the principal at the law firm that bears his name, Stuart D. Kaplow, P.A. He represents a broad breadth of business interests in a varied law practice concentrating on real estate and environmental law with focused experience in sustainability, including green building buttressed with his experience as an environmental entrepreneur. This site is inspired by the idea of digital gardening. For more information about this idea, see: The concept of digital gardening, and why it appeals to me. I think of this site as a notebook in which I’ll explore a variety of topics and reflect on what I’ve learned. Creativity – what it is, how it works and how to cultivate it – is a subject I’m particularly interested in. I’ve created a category specifically for testing creativity advice. Other likely topics for posts include physics, philosophy and psychology. There’s also a category about world-building for games and fiction. > This is a now page. I will update the page roughly once a month to share where I am, what I'm focusing on, and what I don't do. Cape Town, South Africa ### Weekly newsletter about "tech for good" My current focus is to equip changemakers with actionable insights for making sustainable, long-lasting impact in the digital age. While promoting equitable access to ICT from one of the poorest countries in the world, I learned that the development work in the field significantly lacks context awareness, informed decision, and overall productivity. This gap often leads to inefficiencies and missed opportunities to create meaningful change. How can we tackle this systemic challenge and ensure that technology development truly serves those in need? To begin with, I'm collecting various case studies and data in technology development across the globe in a weekly newsletter "**Altruistic Byte**," to broaden and deepen our understanding of digital transformation. Meanwhile, I continuously work with Malawian individuals and businesses to learn from firsthand experience. For instance, I currently serve as the Acting ICT Director at a Malawian non-profit as part of broader technology consultation work. ### Beyond Malawi As a Canadian self-employed business owner, I have clients not only in North America but also in Asia and Africa. I'm genuinely proud of the diverse portfolio and exposure to different culture. However, in reality, my time and energy for the last two years has been skewed significantly towards a single country: Malawi. Despite a little-to-no change in my business portfolio and the country's political and economic landscape, I even reached a point where life in Malawi feels strangely easy. Not to mention it's largely because I, as a privileged expat, already have sufficient funds, a decent job, and quality local connections. Hence, I can vividly visualize how my life would look like a year later if I were to keep investing myself in the country. To me, this "getting stuck" feeling is a clear red flag. By contrast, uncertainty and unforeseen stimulus have driven my career for more than a decade. I believe such challenge-seeking behavior is crucial for changemakers so that we can constantly break the status quo while facing the multifaceted nature of our world. So, it is time to move on. As of writing, I'm in the middle of month-long stay in Cape Town, South Africa for further opportunity exploration in sub-Saharan Africa. ### Scale my business Working independently on social issues may not be sustainable in the long term due to resource constraints and scalability challenges. Thus, I am exploring alternative ways to scale my efforts. For example, I provide 1:1 online mentorship to mentees across the globe, but what if I package the offering as structured educational content? Or, although I've been writing a personal blog for years to share tangible observations and insights here, I could elevate them as more structured publications for targeted audiences - like the newsletter above. I'm actively seeking such opportunities and eager to collaborate with other businesses and global citizens. Contact me if you are interested.

_Last updated on June 13th, 2025_. After a year of work, the Forms Engine contract at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has come to an end. Due to several factors, Agile Six has no further work lined up for me and I have been furloughed. I am currently looking for work as a Senior Ruby on Rails Software Engineer. If you know anyone hiring, send them my way. Meanwhile, I am still the ring announcer for KCXW. _Xtreme Freedom_ is coming up on July 19th. Buy your tickets at kcwrestling.com. My wife and I are still in Kansas City, Missouri. I compete in a karaoke league, eat a lot of BBQ, and recently marched in the 2025 KC Pride Parade. _Dante, a mature tuxedo, and his younger brother, Hazel, an immature tabby_ This page was inspired by the nownownow.com project.

* * new! For Hire! * Projects * Portraits * Blog * About * Now Updated on 2025/06/13 Waiting for our family to grow ------------------------------ My partner and I are expecting our second child to be born any day now :) To say I’m thrilled is an understatement. Looking for work ---------------- My contract got caught in a round of layoffs, so I am now hunting for a new job. I’ve put together a Hire Gosha! website for job hunting purposes, check it out, spread the word, and please let me know if you (or anyone you know) need a senior full-stack engineer who can ship fast. Making progress on Parts ------------------------ Together with my partner, an Internal Family Systems therapist, we’re building Parts, a parts mapping tool for IFS therapists and their clients. We have made a lot of progress on Parts, and we are going to be asking the people who have signed up to the waiting list to start testing it soon. I’m excited to see if this project will fly! Exploring programming languages ------------------------------- In addition to getting comfortable with Clojure and ClojureScript, I’ve been poking at some other programming languages recently, mostly of the functional and strongly typed variety. The most fun of those has been Haskell. I’ve written a little Scheme interpreter in it, which has been a really enjoyable experience. I’d like to get a chance to use Haskell more! Studying computer science and math ---------------------------------- I’ve been very slowly making my way through the legendary computer science textbook, Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs (2nd ed.), by Abelson, Sussman, and Sussman. Although my progress is slow, it is also immensely satisfying, and I hope that brushing up on comp-sci fundamentals (and math — I’ve been going through fundamental courses on Khan Academy) will in the future allow me to tackle harder, more interesting problems in computing. * * *

* Work: * I currently work in SageMaker HyperPod in AWS, where we enable customers to run large-scale Generative AI training and inferencing workloads on Slurm and Kubernetes. * Workout: I row once a week in the beautiful Snohomish river and bike a couple of times per week. I plan to restart top-rope climbing and weight-lifting in the near future. * Books: I am reading Mom’s Test and The Stand, albeit very slowly. * TV: Six Feet Under, Sopranos, Rick and Morty and Young Sheldon. Again, slow pace, given all other stuff going on life. * Still cooking a lot these days, 3-5 times a week. It’s fun! * I am brewing a few ideas for side projects: * An AI application that can explain large code bases. * Consulting or freelancing. * Author a technical book.

I live in Denmark with my wife and two daughters, worked with backend development for two decades, been enthusiastic about computers since my parents put an IBM 386 PC in my room in the early 1990s, like reading science fiction, doing jigsaw puzzles and watch movies. Besides here, my other online presence is on my two other blogs, shortsfreviews.com where I write about science fiction short stories, and my Danish blog filmblog.sysctl.dk were I occasionally write longer posts about movies. My Letterboxd profile is pretty active as I review every film I watch - and I have a self-hosted archive of those reviews. I have tracked my music listening on last.fm for the last 20 years, and I can also be found on tildes.net under the username "winther".
