About me -------- **I write speculative fiction that explores the space between horror and hope.** I’m fascinated by the beliefs and superstitions that emerge from our oldest collective memories, rooted in a time when the world was vast and unknowable. Humanity is all about how we face that unknown, explore its darkest corners, and learn to thrive alongside it, or in spite of it. I grew up wanting to be a professional author. I wrote indiscriminately as a kid: novels, short stories, zines, comics. I read voraciously: lots of fantasy and sci-fi, some horror, plenty of thrillers and mysteries. I worked on my high school’s newspaper staff, and aimed for a creative writing degree. I also grew up playing video games, and in high school, I started learning how to make them. I got involved in the modding scene, made a bunch of maps and mods, and realized I could do interactive storytelling as an actual job. I did that job for 20 years, contributing to titles like Warhawk, Starhawk, and Destiny 2, learning a lot about tech, media, and business, and meeting loads of great people. That ended up being a pretty good decision financially, as writers’ salaries cratered while tech salaries skyrocketed. Over time, however, the games industry became obsessed with ā€œgames as a serviceā€: evergreen, systems-driven experiences that eschew most narrative in favor of repeatable mechanics and patterns. This approach turns out to be _wildly_ more profitable than traditional, story-driven, completable experiences, but it’s also significantly less satisfying to work on when your whole _raison d’être_ is to tell stories. In 2024 I took a sabbatical and started pivoting my life back toward writing. I took a year-long speculative fiction course at Hugo House, taught by the inimitable Nisi Shawl, which was rocket fuel for realigning my creative priorities. I learned how a healthy critique group works, and having one of those has been life-changing. And I had opportunities to write to deadlines, which helped me develop a sense for the actual day-to-day _work_ of writing, not just the craft. I undertook a comprehensive study of the modern business of writing and publishing genre fiction and learned how to build a self-publishing pipeline. I’m figuring out how to build an author platform that feels authentic and natural, where I _look forward_ to posting and interacting, instead of it feeling forced. I haven’t yet gotten into the bookish convention scene, but that’s changing soon. I used to coordinate similar events in the game development space, so I’m really excited to get back into the convention hall and experience it through this new lens. And of course, I’m writing. What I'm doing now... --------------------- If I've said NO to you recently it is because I'm focused on the things below. Nothing personal, I just want to continue to get stuff done. Live like no other, so you can someday live like no other. **Family** * Evenings/weekends are for spending time with my wife and four girls... if I don't seem available assume I'm busy doing something fun with them! **Health** * Current Weight | 242lbs Working to be an active dad for my gaggle of girls. Functional strength training, walking, cycling is on the Final Surge calendar. Goal for November, 2025 is 215lbs, because #dadbod. * Apps | Health & Wellness Fitbod, Nike Training App, Final Surge, and Headspace app -- for strength workouts, HITT/Yoga workouts, training plan, and meditation, respectively. * Begin Strength | Functional Strength Training At 46, it has become super important to maintain my functional strength. As a former Division I collegiate athlete, I've found my joints hurt when I'm inactive and feel their best when I'm in a committed strength training program. I've invested in a full Nike Strength gym set-up and hope to someday make this available for others to join as a gym membership -- stay tuned. **Work - Read Bio** * Begin the work, LLC | Principal Consultant Helping you begin and finish what you've begun so you can begin, again. Looking for high impact opportunities as a Fractional Head of Product, focusing on digital transformation, Product Management, and AI Strategy. * Wylder App | Fractional Head of Product In January, I joined two of my former co-founders of La Barba Coffee in SLC, as their fractional Head of Product for Wylder an app for runners, run groups, run clubs, brands, and influenceers. I've put all my publishing projects in one place -- Story.Build. StoryBuild Product Journals are available for sale, as well as our Draw Your Own Adventure comic books for kids ages 5-12. Published works now available -- https://books.story.build * I Build for Real People | By Sam DuRegger My first book, I Build for Real People, Not Just Metrics: A Product Manifesto is now available. This is not a framework, not another product playbook, or 7-step process to maximize output. This is about why I build, and who I want to build with and for. After 18 years of leading digital products, from quick service restaurants to fintech, fitness to AI, I kept circling the same questions. What does it mean to build something real? What happens when we design for trust, not just transactions? What kind of culture produces meaningful products? And why does belonging matter more than engagement? This manifesto is part biography, part strategy, part call to action. It’s for founders who care about how things feel, for product leaders who want to ask better questions, and for teams trying to build with intention, not just revenue forecasts. Also available on Substack: Product Manifesto. I ā¤ļø Coffee & Tea ----------------- * Woodshed Tea | Curated Loose Leaf Tea, Responsibly Sourced. Since 2015, we've offered a curated selection of loose leaf teas for online purchase, shipping all over the country. After closing our North OKC location in October of 2024, we've been hard at work getting our Bellwether Roaster online and a new cold brew manufacturing space set up. For now you can order our blends and single origin coffees via tmrw.coffee. * Barista Bot | Text your ā˜•ļø order like you text your friends. Barista Bot, is an alumni of i2E's E3 and Bridge2 pre-accelerator. I’ve worked in design, web development and information management for over 30 years. Many years ago featured in the seminal **Zen of CSS Design** book, I also wrote a little book of my own on Sketchnoting This is a place to post thoughts and play around in the grand tradition of the early days of the web. I occasionally **blog**. I especially like to draw **sketchnotes**, and you can find lots of those on this site. I had fun collecting and reviewing UK university logos, which you can find in the imaginatively titled **unilogos** section. I try to log what films and books I’ve consumed, so I know where all the time goes. My Weeknotes are sporadic - but aren’t everyone’s? Find me on Bluesky where I usually repost very occasional things from nice people. Letterboxd, where I log films and have fun making peculiar little lists. Instagram for the occasional drawing and to follow friends, and finally LinkedIn - the frankly strange but sort of necessary place. We don’t talk about the other place any more.
